Board Discusses Moving Elections to Even Years
The Board discussed the pros and cons of moving future School District elections from the current practice of odd years to the more common practice of even years. It was noted that only 44 school districts out of approximately 350 in the state of Minnesota hold their elections in odd years. It was also noted that the City of Shakopee recently made the decision to move its elections from odd to even years and it would be cost effective and promote higher voter turnout to align the District's elections with the city's.
"If we were to pass the resolution and make the change, the impact would be that the next scheduled school board election in 2017 would be moved to 2018 and the election that is scheduled for 2019 would be moved to 2020," Bowerman said.
No official action was taken on the subject, but the topic will be readdressed at a future business meeting.
