R.M.O. Design
In 2001, Barchard Engineering Ltd. diversified its business and manufactured its first custom natural gas regulating, metering, and odorizing (R.M.O.) station. Since that time, Barchard Engineering Ltd. has proudly designed and fabricated custom R.M.O. stations and solutions for numerous natural gas Co-ops across Alberta.
As a recognized industry supplier, Barchard Engineering Ltd. continues to offer a range of natural gas R.M.O. solutions which conform to the highest industry standards.
Barchard Engineering Ltd. understands the importance of selecting a natural gas R.M.O. system that is effective, produced with high quality, and will last in the field for many years to come. We plan and produce each system based on your specifications, ensuring reliable gas control and supply in a variety of distribution and transmission environments.
We offer in detail:
- customer specific solutions from the ground up
- custom buildings which can replace existing ones with little to no piping changes
- support during start up and installation
- passive odorant systems with horizontal or space-saving vertical tanks, or odorant injection system packages
- only the best components as we are a distributor for GE Oil and Gas including Mooney, Becker, Roots and more
- fully welded stations which save time during installation and minimize the chance of leaks developing over time (flanged stations are also an option).
We would be pleased to review your specific requirements and design and manufacture a solution for you. Please contact us for more information or to receive a quote.

Natural Gas, like all other gasses, is a compressible substance and has a density determined by its pressure, temperature and composition. When buying and selling gas, people want to know the quantity of (or amount of energy provided by) the gas they are purchasing, not the volume. Gas meters of all types are capable of measuring the actual volume of gas that flows through them, and then various correction factors need to be applied to account for the effects of pressure, temperature, and gas composition.
Approved instruments such as the Mercury Mini AT and the Mini-Max, can be placed on diaphragm, rotary, or turbine meters and can correct for live Temperature, live Pressure and Temperature, or live Pressure, Temperature, and Super-compressibility.

Each month Barchard Engineering will answer a FAQ in hopes of providing you with accurate information that is relevant to your day to day business needs.
Q: "When is a PFM Regulator required?"
A: "In Measurement Canada’s inspection procedure, PFM installation is defined as a meter installation using an Approved Pressure Factor Metering Regulator to maintain an average meter pressure that exceeds the mean atmospheric pressure or the atmospheric pressure calculated, declared or measured, as the case may be, by more than 3.5 kPa in the International system of units or 0.5 psi in the Imperial system of units.
Also the Electricity & Gas Inspection Regulations, states that owners records shall contain … where the average meter pressure exceeds the mean atmospheric pressure or the atmospheric pressure calculated, declared or measured, as the case may be, pursuant to section 36 or 37, by more than 3.5 kPa in the International system of units or 0.5 psi in the Imperial system of units.
To summarize, PFM Regulators are required anytime there is over 1/2 psi in the meter (>14" w.c.) AND you don't have a Measurement Canada approved pressure corrector/instrument. "
If you have any questions that you would like answered, please feel free to contact us. We would be happy to provide a response to your question and may publish it in the next months newsletter.
