FHS NEWS: Term 4

Update from
the Principal

Finally it would seem that spring is upon us with a beautiful blue sky across Bristol as I sit and write to you all.

Year 11 are of course really focussed on their GCSE exams, with the first English Language exam occurring at the beginning of May. Once again we are offering Saturday revision sessions, targeted after-school interventions, Easter School and Half Term School, therefore all Year 11 students should be staying after school and attending holiday sessions. We have also have GCSEPod which provides students with the means of revising in any place at any time on a smartphone or handheld device. This is a suite of support that is not offered by any other school in Bristol.

Not only have we had an incredibly successful Science Week but we have also had an amazing Maths Week which included a considerable number of events and competitions. Students this weekend were camping under canvas on Duke of Edinburgh weekend surviving long walks and freezing temperatures. We also have the school show to look forward to just before the end of term.

This time last year we were about to consult on a school sixth form. While the Regional Commissioner Sir David Carter decided to stall our application we continue to pursue this in the light of the 14-19 review in Bristol.

FHS has also been informed that the intake for our Year 7 students in September will be oversubscribed and already this year with have had 70 applications for other year groups as our reputation goes from strength to strength. We will be in the top 15% for value added again this year which has been recognised as outstanding by the DFE; a real testament to the community faith in the education we are giving students here.

On a different topic I realise that a secondary school set up is very different from a primary one. Can I take these opportunity to just remind parents that if you have any concerns about your son/daughter's education here or wish to speak to someone about events at home that may affect them in school please email or speak to their tutor in the first instance or their Achievement Coordinator. If it is about a specific subject then please discuss with their subject teacher or Head of Faculty. The emails for these staff are available in the planner. I am happy to be copied in to any emails if you feel you wish to but these staff should be the first port of call.

I am looking forward to the many exciting events and activities available to our students in the forthcoming summer terms.

Thank you again for your continued support of the school and all that we do here.

Ms Catriona Mangham

Principal
