No. 32

From the Headmaster

I would like to thank the parents, alumni, pupils and staff who supported the Senior Netball team at ‘Superball’ last Saturday. It was extraordinary to have over 1,200 spectators at a school fixture and many congratulations to the team and coaches for their 44-25 victory and for retaining the trophy. A full account is included below and our thanks go to the University of Worcester for hosting this superb event in the University Arena.

In music, hot on the heels of the Choral Concert, we had ‘Cabaret’ on Tuesday evening this week, in which the Big Band, Junior Ensemble and Senior Jazz all performed with 15 different lead singers from Year Nine to the Upper Sixth. There were some truly magnificent performances and the evening was a great showcase for our pupils’ musical talents.

We welcomed the French Exchange and said goodbye to the Spanish Exchange this week and The RGS Times includes details of Academic achievements alongside Fencing, CCF and Outdoor Pursuits activities. As the pupils head off for their Easter break, I hope they feel a real sense of achievement in all areas of school life from this busy Lent Term.

I wish everyone in the RGS community a Happy Easter.

Intercambio Goya
We were delighted to welcome our Spanish partners from Zaragoza, in our ninth year of working together.  This year we had 16 students and 2 teachers staying with RGS families. The first challenge on Wednesday was when the guests attended lessons with a Latin vocabulary test (they passed with honours) to Spanish speed dating in the Playground – so all Year Ten Spanish students could question our visitors, in Spanish of course!  Read more here.
Shooting Stars of the Future
Eleven schools took part in this year’s Primary Schools Netball Tournament where we saw an abundance of enthusiasm and some really competitive matches. All matches were officiated by staff and pupils from RGS Worcester so that visiting teachers were able to watch their pupils play.  Read more here.
In Training for the Himalaya
In July this year, 17 pupils from Year Eleven and the Lower Sixth will be undertaking a three week challenge to trek through the Indian Himalaya and ascend a 6000m mountain.
In preparation for this they attended a training camp in the frozen wastes of Snowdonia last weekend, along with their two professional mountain guides Adele Pennington and Simon Verspeak, plus Dr Sangster and Mr Leeds.  Read more here.
Debating Winning Ways with Thursfields
Over the Easter weekend, Senior debaters from RGS Worcester will be in action at the Durham University Schools Competition. Over 70 teams from across the country compete in this prestigious event. RGS Fashion Icons at the NEC
It has been a showcase week for our talented Textiles students exhibiting their work at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. The Year Ten students who entered the Fashion Icon Competition, had been asked to design a fashion piece inspired by 'Japanese Street Fashion'.  Beth Rabjohn and Lily Dugdale, Year Eleven, were selected as finalists for the Midlands Region and will have had the opportunity to make up their chosen design to exhibit on the catwalk at the Fashion, Embroidery & Stitch Show later this year.  Read more here.
RGS Fencers success at the Public Schools’ Championships

Herculean Highs
On a lovely sunny Field Day morning in Worcester, we left for Brize Norton, only to find that fog and mist were covering the airbase for most of the morning.  However, this did not dampen the spirits of our 15 intrepid RAF cadets who spend the morning learning the art of low ropes and high ropes climbing. Mrs Kettle and Flight Officer Dixon watched in amazement as the cadets climbed and moved at least 10 metres above ground with ease and confidence; they worked as a team to balance and help each other.  Read more here.
Language in the Laboratory
Sixteen Sixth Form Language students  took advantage of our excellent facilities (and staff expertise!) to take part in an intensive ‘Speaking Day’ on Friday. With the French and Spanish exam orals coming up soon after Easter, it was a chance to make real steps forward in confidence, as well as gain familiarity with the wide range of topics and skills covered.  Read more here.
