April Activities
We will be available to answer fair housing questions, including taking information about possible housing discrimination at these events: "Anywhere But Here" our travelling exhibit of Oregon's history of discrimination, will be up for public viewing:

FHA Design & Construction Training
FHCO is proud to be a co-sponsor of an upcoming training on Fair Housing accessibility requirements for multifamily housing. Fair Housing First, the premier national trainer in this area, will be coming to Portland to offer this all-day training on June 21st.

Training in accessibility requirements is a must for developers and architects and is strongly recommended for property management companies and community development corporations. Local permitting offices need to be on top of these requirements as well, and local governments should promote the training to permitting staff to meet their requirements of Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.

Fair Housing First is based in Washington DC and works with HUD to provide technical assistance and guidance in accessibility nationwide. The all-day training will cover all aspects of accessibility requirements and enforcement. All participants will leave with in-depth materials to guide future developments.

This training is critically important for anyone involved, directly or indirectly, in the development of new multifamily Housing. FHCO continues to see frequent cases of apartments and condos that do not meet these federal requirements, and penalties for violations are steep. This training is an opportunity to get up to speed and ask the experts your questions.

Alexandria Nagy of Portland is the Grand Prize Winner of FHCO's annual Fair Housing Poster Contest! Alexandria will be signing posters at our open house on April 19th. She will also be joining other Portland area winners at Portland City Hall on April 13th, for the city's Proclamation of Fair Housing Day.
Welcome, Monica!
Monica Melgar-Sharman has joined FHCO as an Intake Specialist and Program Assistant. Already she has gotten impressive results.

Monica has a background in harm reduction and social justice. She attended the Portland State University School of Social Work and has worked with many agencies in the Portland area including Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare, Outside In, and SMYRC. Monica spends her time playing music, studying herbal medicine, and organizing community projects.
Farewell, Malia!
Malia Bennett has been our Enforcement Coordinator since April, 2013. She is an attorney and is fluent in Spanish. Malia came to us with strong organizational skills, attention to detail and great personality. She has helped beef up our testing program, training more testers and managing all the tests for our HUD enforcement grant. She has also filed and investigated complaints, and assisted in training FHCO's attorney pool and other state and federal enforcement personnel.

We have all benefited from Malia's expertise, insights, and perspective. She will soon be leaving us to assist victims of sexual assault with another non-profit.  We will miss her hard work, enthusiasm, and sense of humor.

Good luck to Malia on her new venture. They are very lucky to have her!
