News from SUSSED

Thanks To All Our Customers

Everyone has a choice about how they spend their money, making conscious choices is a powerful way to make a difference to tackling the social and environmental challenges we face.

This includes the products we buy (from SUSSED), the companies we buy from and the banks we entrust our money with (we’re with the Cooperative Bank).

Across Britain people are making these conscious choices at a growing rate, according to the recent 2015 Ethical Consumer Market Report, despite difficult market conditions.

Thanks to you, SUSSED has maintained its sales despite the recession and internet sales – let’s all keep bucking the general retail trend.

In this issue:

The true cost of cheap jeans

The Guardian has accused Lidl of paying just 23p per hour to workers
(8hours x 6 days per week) to make its cheap jeans.

Lidl is currently marketing a pair of jeans at £5.99. That is more than £3 cheaper than Primark and £12 less than Tesco sells their cheapest denims for.

How do they do it? The newspaper says it's not magic its exploitation.

Cadbury’s Tax Avoidance

Owned now by US food-giant Mondelez (formerly Kraft) for 5 years is another multi-sized outfit who has set up a dodgy tax avoidance scheme.

The founders of Cadbury will be turning in their graves said Margaret Hodge, Chair of the Commons all party committee on responsible tax.

Channel 4’s Dispatches  22/3/16 also revealed what the company have got up to since it was bought by Mondelez. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches/

For too long HMRC have sent signals to the multinationals that they are prepared to negotiate everything.

What can you do?

We’re urging you to pledge to boycott Cadbury’s, who made £96.5 million profit in 2014, until at least it pays a fair amount of corporation tax. And buy your fairly traded chocolate from SUSSED.

SUSSED now has an Ebay shop offering charity donation.

We are slowly developing our range on eBay. Please tell friends and family that if they use the site, 10% will be donated to our charity Sustainable Wales. Bamboo socks, one of our best-sellers are ideal gifts. Order online and we will post away for you. Or you can see the fab new spring and summer selection also in SUSSED.

Local Crafter Helps Families in Zambia

Our most recent window display has featured a number of bright knitted baby clothes in support of Friends of Monze.

Started by Deana Owen, it is a rapidly growing kitchen-table charity striving to help the people of Monze in Zambia - challenges facing the locals include HIV/AIDS, climate change and poverty. Aside from knitting children’s wear to raise funds to support the charity, Deana periodically flies to visit the area to lend a hand and assist with local projects including providing a borehole and a pig rearing project.

Should you wish to support Friends of Monze, baby and toddlers knitted wear can be purchased in the shop or to invite Deana to speak at your organisation call her on 07807 660543.

Recent and Forthcoming Events

Fairtrade Fortnight 2016

Fairtrade Foundation Research shows that:
  • In the world's main tea producing regions, more than 30% of children are malnourished – resulting in stunted physical and mental development. In Malawi, this rises to 50%
  • 65% of cocoa farmers in Côte d'Ivoire lack enough resources for food during the months of July and August. 80% live on less than 40p a day per person.
  • Smallholder coffee farmers in three Central American countries were found to have no guarantee of food security for 3-4 months every year.
There has been lots of activity due to Fairtrade Fortnight which ran from the 29th - 13th March 2016. SUSSED celebrated by giving away freebie chocolates, samples of tea and coffee while raising awareness.

Our ‘Stand Up for Farmers, Sit Down Breakfast’ event, which was held upstairs in the Green Room above SUSSED, offered organic and local produce as well as Fairtrade teas, coffees and juices. Locally produced handmade cakes proved particularly popular. Thanks to all those cooks!

Many local schools and churches across the borough joined in the fortnight’s celebrations. Pencoed and Porthcawl Comprehensive schools and Nottage Primary and Coychurch Primary all had Fairtrade school stalls supplied by SUSSED. This helps the schools maintain their Fairtrade Status, while also raising awareness about the importance of sustainable farming and production as well as ethical consumerism.

‘Shine A Light?’

A campaign film promoting Wales-wide local energy

Produced by Sustainable Wales and supported by Community Energy Wales. see here http://www.sustainablewales.org.uk/shine-light

Our film contains local images of the Cenin ‘renewable energy cluster’ at Stormy Down and Porthcawl’s iconic breakwater, rapidly becoming world famous because of its breaking waves.

‘Shine a Light?’ proposes that all UK political parties commit themselves to locally owned renewable energy schemes.

Wales and the UK lag far behind our European neighbours and some states in the USA regarding local energy production.

Producer, Margaret Minhinnick, Director Sustainable Wales says: “Shine a Light? supports the idea of democratising our energy supply, bringing ownership and profit back into communities whilst reducing climate change.“

Music is supplied by Twm Morys, singing traditional Glamorgan ‘tribannau’ to his own tune. It was recorded in the Minhinnicks’ bathroom - another integral Porthcawl feature.

Get in touch if you want to help this campaign.

As members of Community Energy Wales we want to see:
  • Targets for community energy in Wales
  • A right of local supply
  • Easing of the planning process for Community Renewables
  • Measures to address grid constraints
  • A community right to buy in Wales
  • Co-ordinated and co-designed support for Community Energy in Wales

SUSSED is Recruiting Volunteers

SUSSED is a community cooperative, run by the community for the community, and volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. People help because they want to make a commitment, gain new friends, learn new things, get creative, increase experience, add to their cv and/or feel passionately about people and the planet.

Tasks range from retail and customer sales, shop display and promotion, cleaning, to admin assistants and event help. We are open from Monday to Saturday and on average, people work for a morning or an afternoon.

Do you have time to spare or can pass on this request to others? If so, please email Alexis alexis@sustainablewales.org.uk or call 01656 783 962 for a chat.
