Sacred Music Studies
Year 2 - April
Easter blessings to you! He is risen, alleluia!

There is a lot of music to enjoy during the holy season of Easter. Some standards to be familiar with would be The Clouds of Night Are Passed Away, Regina Caeli, (there are many versions, and last year we learned the Gregorian Chant), Ye Sons and Daughters (O Filii et Filiae) and Jesus Christ is Risen Today...to name a few. These will be covered in the years ahead in these studies.

The hymn this month, however, was chosen because April is the month dedicated to the Eucharist. It is another hymn by Fr. Frederick Faber, and it's probably familiar to you already.  If so, maybe challenge yourself to learn as many verses as you can.
Month at-a-glance:

Hymn: Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All

Gregorian chant: Words with Wings - most of the lessons this month teach Haec dies, which was sung during the Easter Mass

The arrangement above is by the Daughters of Mary, a religious order that sells beautiful albums of Catholic liturgical music as one way to help support their apostolate. I highly recommend listening to their albums!
Hymn: Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All
Text: Fr. Frederick Faber
Tune: Known as the hymn tune SWEET SACRAMENT from
Romischkatholisches Gesangbuchlein, 1826

TEXT:

1.
Jesus my Lord, my God, my all
How can I love thee as I ought?
And how revere this wondrous gift
So far surpassing hope or thought?

Chorus:
    Sweet Sacrament, we Thee adore
Oh make us love Thee more and more
Oh make us love Thee more and more.

2.
Had I but Mary's sinless heart,
To love Thee with, my dearest King
Oh, with what bursts of fervent praise
Thy goodness Jesus, would I sing!

3.
Oh, see upon the altar placed,
The Victim of divinest love!
Let all the earth below adore,
And join the choirs of heaven above.

4.
Ah, see within a creature's hand
The vast Creator deigns to be.
Reposing, infant-like, as though,
On Joseph's arms, on Mary's knee.

5.
Thy Body, Soul, and Godhead, all
O mystery of love divine
I cannot compass all I have
For all Thou hast and art are mine

6.
Sound, sound His praises higher still
And come, ye angels, to our aid
'Tis God, 'tis God, the very God
Whose power both man and angels made.

Connect on the Google+ Community

I started a Google+ community for these studies. This has great potential for being a place to: 1) discuss the music we are learning each month, and 2) share our learning experiences with others. I think it would be helpful if Q&A, interesting facts found, or other helpful information could be easily seen and discussed by all.  Think of it as an online study and support group.

Let's enjoy this learning experience together!

If you are new to Google+,  here's a great tutorial on getting started
