SAM'S CENTS
Choose a Boss
Sara went into advertising sales because she heard great things about the "family friendly" industry, one in which she could make great money without a career that swallowed all of her time. In the early years this was true, but then she started working for Roberta, an executive who spent every waking hour working.
By the time Sara came to me for advice, she was distraught. I have heard this kind of scenario play out time and time again and the answer is simple: Choose a boss that values his or her personal life, not an industry that does.
There are few bad industries but there are tons of bad bosses. Look for a manager who works hard at the office but also cares deeply about spending time with her family and friends outside of the office.
If your boss doesn't value his or her personal life, they will never value yours.
