March 2016
Vadnais Heights Economic
Development Corporation
The VHEDC is a group of business leaders engaging with community stakeholders to enhance the economic vitality of our community.
Executive Director Notes
It continues to be an exciting time in the local business community. The VHEDC, in partnership with the City of Vadnais Heights, recently completed the interview period of our Business Retention & Survey process. 45 local businesses were interviewed, and now the University of Minnesota Extension Office is tabulating the results. We especially want to thank our community Task Force which helped in the interviewing process. More to come on this project soon.

The VHEDC hosted Fresh Thyme Farmers Market representatives for a meet and greet in March. They were able to meet other businesses leaders ahead of their launch into the community. They are scheduled to open in early August.

Spring is here!  With that, we are certainly getting excited for the new Farmers Market that will start this summer in Vadnais Heights. In addition, we are ramping up for our annual Keith Warner Memorial Golf Tournament.

Finally, businesses and organizations are always looking for more opportunities to connect with the local community. At the VHEDC, we are committed to connecting not just within a city but focusing on the entirety of our trade area. One initiative to achieve this is hosting a Northeast Community Business Expo to bring community residents from several cities together with businesses and organizations from throughout the trade area. The event will include substantial opportunities for businesses/organizations to highlight themselves, local and regional entertainment, and many elements of free family fun! Let someone else promote and drive the event (VHEDC and Press Pubs) while you work on engaging your potential customers and community. I hope you will consider participating and/or attending this event!

How to Interview Interns Webinar
Internships are a great
way to boost your productivity, bring in fresh perspectives and develop future talent for your organization. They are also a great way for students to receive the hands-on experience they need to translate classroom learning into a business environment where they can make a contribution. The potential for creating a win-win situation for both sides is tremendous. To generate a mutually beneficial experience, it’s important to make sure the match is a good fit for both you and your intern.

Liz Cherif, Director of Corporate Technology Talent Acquisition at Thomson Reuters, will share her expertise on how to identify the best fit for your internship position during the interviewing process. Register here for this free webinar taking place on Thursday, March 31 at 10:00 a.m.

Discover how to find answers to these key questions:

  • Does the candidate have the experience and skills – and more importantly, the soft skills – to be successful in this internship?
  • Does this internship align with the candidate’s educational and career objectives?
  • Does the candidate fit in with the culture of the company and the team?

Get expert interviewing tips, including:

  • “Must ask” questions
  • Questions you should never ask
  • Reading non-verbal cues

BONUS: Learn how your company may be eligible for a 50% cash match for STEM intern wages through SciTechsperience. A previously recorded webinar on SciTechsperience is available on the Program Overview page of SciTechMN.org.

This webinar is ideal for small employers, HR staff and hiring managers who take part in their company’s hiring process.
