Pastor’s Corner:
Easter Gratitude

Christ is risen, and new life abounds in this Easter season! As I prepare to welcome a new baby into my family, I want to thank you for your generous gift of parental leave. Having 12 weeks to bond at home with my family is an amazing blessing, and I am grateful for your support. My last day in the office will be Wednesday, April 6 (barring an earlier arrival of the baby), and I look forward to returning to LOUCC on Thursday, June 22. I will be gone for 11 weeks of full-time leave, and then back for two weeks at a half-time schedule, and then back to full-time ministry. I look forward to rejoining you this summer!

In the meantime, I am so excited for you to share in ministry with Liz Durant. Both my colleague and my friend, Liz is a faithful minister with a deep love for God, for God’s people, and for justice. Her passion and enthusiasm will be a gift to all of you, and you, with your openness, extravagant welcome, and loving hearts, will be a gift to her. I know you will have a fruitful ministry together.

I am also so grateful to Moderator Nan Deane, Moderator-Elect Pam Rossio, our Church Council, and our staff for stepping up these next 12 weeks to support our congregation as we share in the Parental Leave time. While Liz will be covering the bulk of worship, pastoral care, and administrative duties, our leaders will continue to oversee the many additional ministries of LOUCC, as well as support Liz and our congregation as a whole.

Finally, since we as UCCers believe in the priesthood of all believers, I am also grateful to each of you for being the ministers of our church. God’s Spirit is and will continue to be with you, equipping you for ministry, enabling you to love one another, and helping you to reach out to others in need.

While I will miss seeing you over these next 12 weeks, know that I will be holding you in my thoughts and prayers. I look forward to hearing about all that you learn and experience in these coming months, and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you.

Thank you for your love and support, and many blessings to you in this Eastertide!

Sharing our journey,
Rev. Jennie Ott

Note from Parental Leave Pastor

Greetings from your Parental Leave Pastor! I'm honored to be serving with you while Jennie Ott is on parental leave.

As Jennie celebrates the birth of her child, we'll be celebrating at LOUCC and exploring what "New Life in the Spirit" means for us. The Christian season of Eastertide (from now until Pentecost in mid-May) is an opportunity for us to consider the impact of Jesus' resurrection. What does it mean that Jesus is alive? How does the Spirit of God, Love-That-Overcomes-Death, call us into new ways of living?

We'll walk with the Jesus-followers as they encounter the Risen Christ and struggle to build a new community in a world where suffering and death is just “business as usual” and the new life of resurrection is…well, revolutionary! Along the way we'll encounter some interesting characters who have their lives changed in unexpected ways.

What refreshing, renewing presence are we seeking? How is the Spirit bringing new life into our lives? I'm curious about all that we'll discover together, and so excited to journey with you.

My office hours, starting April 4, are Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and by appointment. You can reach me at liz@loucc.org or via phone/text at (503) 951-7864. Please don't hesitate to reach out...I'd love to hear from you!

In joyful anticipation,
Liz Durant

Moderator's Corner

Looking out into the garden, there are so many signs of new life. The trees are in bloom. The bulbs are popping. The garden is nearly ready to plant.

LOUCC is also preparing to welcome a new baby into our midst. I am so proud of our congregation in supporting Jennie’s parental leave. This time will allow her to step back from LOUCC to focus on her family.

During this time, we are very excited to welcome Elizabeth Durant (Liz) as the parental leave pastor. Liz will officially begin on April 4, but has already met with the Worship team and Council. Liz will work 30 hours per week with a focus on planning and leading Worship, pastoral care needs, and taking care of Administrative needs.

Jennie and Liz will have an opportunity to overlap during the first week of April. April 10 will be Liz’s first Sunday of leading Worship. Please extend a warm LOUCC welcome to Liz, Sadie, and their daughter, Ellie!

The month of April offers many ways to be involved in the wider life of the church. A book study, Operation Nightwatch, Grubby Sunday, Dinners for 8, and a Poetry Jam are just a few ways to connect with others in LOUCC. Details can be found in the newsletter and the e-news. There are many possibilities!

Easter blessings to all!
Nan

Our flower beds are beginning to flourish with spring blooms and new growth, and they welcome the attention of willing hands. We're hoping to gather together folks who would like to give our beds some loving care.

Whether you are an experienced digger or can't yet tell a weed from a flower, if your time and energy are bountiful or if they are limited, you would be welcome. Wherever you are in your gardening journey, you are welcome here!

There will be a meeting after church on Sunday, April 3 after Jennie & Hilary's Sprinkle, to discuss planning this group. Please join us!  Any questions, please contact Sandy Johnson at sandrafayj@gmail.com, or Linda Segal at commutersegal@yahoo.com.

Arts & Adult Education

LOUCC Marks National Poetry Month

Arts and Adult Education is sponsoring discussion of Christian Wiman’s "My Bright Abyss: Meditation of a Modern Believer." A well-respected poet who teaches Religion and Literature at Yale Divinity School, Wiman addresses issues such as how reading poetry affected his spiritual life while he was struggling with an advanced form of cancer.

Bob Miller, who was profiled in the February Newsletter, will be facilitating the discussion of this short but challenging collection of essays. He notes that they might not appeal to people who are absolutely sure that they hate poetry as Wiman likes to quote it. But Bob adds that the book is not for poetry-lovers alone—that it might appeal to any person of faith who has struggled with a major illness, or from the grief that follows a losing battle with one, and sought solace through thoughtful reading.

Discussions will take place in the Weidman Room at 11:45 a.m. on April 3, 10, and 17, each session lasting no longer than 90 minutes. A light lunch will be available. For questions about the book or about the discussion of it, contact Bob at (503) 628-9438. For a copy of the book, contact Penny Holcomb at
(503) 957-1922.

Beyond Racism

Beyond Racism/Arts & Adult Ed:
Want to know more about Islam?

"Reel vs. Real: Muslim Media Stereotypes and Islamophobia"
Presented by M. Z. Cahana & Dr. J Badawi
April 7, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

LOUCC’s Beyond Racism and Arts & Adult Ed teams, together with Beit Haverim’s Tikkun Olam, invite the members of our congregations to attend a movie presentation, "Reel vs. Real: Muslim Media Stereotypes and Islamophobia," on April 7, 7:00-8:30 p.m., at the Oregon Historical Society. This presentation in sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society, the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education and the World Affairs Council. The public is invited. Join us in conversation with a panel of community leaders as they respond to film clips from a documentary called "Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People," a companion film to Jack Shaheen’s book of the same title. Panelists will speak about how they deal with Islamophobia in their own communities and audience members will have the chance to ask questions about how to best confront Islamophobia when it presents itself.” Carpooling from LOUCC will be available.

April "Connection" Dinners

The popular connection potluck dinners are returning in April! One dinner will be held on Saturday, April 16, and the other on Sunday, April 24. Each will be hosted in a congregant's home and promises to be a most enjoyable evening. Our Connection Dinners are a wonderful way to connect with one another while sharing a meal. Pat Crane will have sign up sheets at church. You can also reach her at 503-636-0503 or at pdcrane@comcast.net

Mission and Social Justice

We have several things happening with our Committee this Spring. The Operation Nightwatch dinner is pending as of this writing. We hope it comes together smoothly and a warm meal is served to those living in need in SE Portland.

Dining for Women is growing. Read the Press Release here: Dining for Women Joins Forces With White House and Peace Corps. We meet the Third Thursday of each month for a potluck meal and to learn about the featured program of the month.

Sew-ers and shoppers are asked to donate new kids' pajamas, which we will be collecting throughout the month of May for the new group, Pajama Gramma, who collect new pajamas for kids - babies through teens - in the foster system. When kids enter the foster system they often only have the clothes they are wearing. A new pair of pajamas can help provide comfort to a kid who is scared and uncertain of the future.

Nicaragua delegates are getting plans in place for our next Mission trip in August. Watch for more information (to come) on how we can help support our group of delegates.

Worship Tips and Courtesies

As we move into spring, and also into Oregon’s primary election season, it’s a good time to do some “house keeping” at LOUCC, and look at tips and courtesies we can employ as members of a diverse congregation sharing worship time together.

Announcements – Most announcements can be put in either our service bulletin or eNews. Please check with our office administrator for deadlines. The pastor will determine if there is something to be highlighted at the beginning of each worship service. Other news can be shared informally during coffee hour following the service.

Prayers – As a community of faith, we value this time to share with one another a part of our lives. Please be mindful that this time is for prayer concerns and joys, and it is helpful if these stay focused and brief.

Feel a need for some privacy during worship? The balcony is open and provides a nice place to participate in worship, but have a respite from the masses.

Politics – ‘tis the season... Whether you are a political wonk, a true believer, or someone who just needs to process with others, please do so at our coffee hour following worship rather than in the worship service itself. We are a church with differing views and like to make the worship space open and welcoming to all.

Nametags, please! - To help our Parental Leave Pastor (and guests and new members), please wear your nametag during the worship service and coffee hour. If you need a new one, fill out the “needs” form on the sign-in table as you enter the front doors. And, if you forget to take it off and head out into the community, consider that an invitation for others to get to know LOUCC.

-These tips and courtesies provided by the Worship Committee

One Great Hour of Sharing - Thank You!

Thanks to all who participated in the UCC's One Great Hour of Sharing special offering on March 6.

Together we raised $1,285 for global disaster relief.
Thank you!
