A Special Day!

More than 400 athletes participated in Area 14 Special Olympics, held for the first time at Southern Wesleyan University April 6 at Joe R. Gilbert Track and Field Complex. These were the 38th Spring Games to be hosted by Area 14, which comprises the Anderson area. Athletes from districts 1-4 of Area 14 participated in the games. The complex filled rapidly with hundreds of athletes, volunteers and family and friends of the athletes, and community members. President Todd Voss opened the games after declaring, “This campus is not ours; this campus is yours!”

Nicholson Mitchell Christian Ministry Center Dedication is Wednesday

Music Majors Honors Recital – Tuesday, Apr. 12, 7:30 p.m.
Selected Southern Wesleyan University music majors are featured in the Music Majors Honors Recital on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. This event is part of Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Fine Arts Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central Admission is free. Gospel Extravaganza – Sunday, Apr. 17, 3 p.m.
Come listen to an afternoon of inspirational gospel music by some of the area’s finest gospel choirs on Sunday, April 17 from 3 - 6 p.m. The Gospel Extravaganza will be held in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center and admission is free. Call ext. 5408 for more information. This event is a part of a weeklong area festival, The Clemson Area Blues Festival. Warriors hosting Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night

SWU Baseball will be hosting Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night on Wednesday, April 13 at 6 p.m. at Dr. Keith Connor Field. Faculty and staff arriving by 5:45 p.m. will be able to take the field with the Warriors for the National Anthem and receive a free drink and slice of pizza courtesy of Palmetto Pizza.

‘It’s on us’ the theme of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) with the goal of raising awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it.

“We all need to be invested and we need to be aware of this issue, provide educational resources and safe havens,” said Dr. Justin Carter, associate vice president for student life. “It’s on us to be a community effort.”

According to Carter, several activities are planned for April, and information will be available throughout the month. Every Wednesday, a table will be set up in International Hall of the Jennings Campus Life Center. There will also be a lunch and learn for faculty and staff about the film “The Hunting Ground,” which will premiere April 24 in the Founders, located on the lower level of the University Dining Commons building. Also planned are classes devoted to self-protection, SWU Denim Day April 25 and Teal Ribbon Day April 29. For Details about SAAM, email jcarter@swu.edu or visit itsonus.org.

Congratulations!

SWU alum Phillip Boyer ('10) and his wife Kim were featured on HGTV's House Hunters with their real estate agent, Central's own Joey Martin. In the episode, which aired March 7, the Boyers looked at houses in Central and Clemson. Boyer works at Clemson University.
Dr. Jennifer Wagner has been selected to serve as a state qualified S.C. Facilitator. Participation in this event will enable Wagner to expand her work in making a positive difference for children receiving special education services in South Carolina. Dr. Sandra McLendon, dean of SWU’s School of Education, said “This is a wonderful opportunity which will enhance instruction for all of Southern Wesleyan University’s education majors as well as the special education majors.” She starts training this week in Columbia.

Warriors well-represented at Student Athlete Day

Men’s soccer player Ruben Rodriguez and Volleyball player Sarah Hughey represented SWU at the National Student-Athlete Recognition held at the Statehouse April 6. The mission of the National Student-Athlete Day is to recognize and honor the outstanding achievements of the State of South Carolina’s student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics, while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities.
