In the Multicultural Centre Public Art Gallery

hiraeth
Gillian Willans
April 3rd – 29th, 2016

Hiraeth, is a Welsh word that has no direct English translation.

The University of Wales, Lampeter attempts to define it as homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. “a homesickness for a home you cannot return to, or that never was”

The Multicultural Centre Public Art Gallery is located upstairs on the main floor of the Multicultural Heritage Centre. It is one of seven Public Art Galleries in Alberta and the only one located in rural Alberta.

The Multicultural Heritage Centre is now reserving plots for the Community Gardens for 2016. The plots are located to the South of the Centre and can be reserved by anyone. (There is an annual fee of $30.)

Launched in 2010, this very popular program offers local green thumbs an opportunity to plant and grow their own vegetable gardens. There are 60 organic four – by eight-foot raised-bed garden plots and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to the use of the garden, special programs are offered, free, to all participants throughout the summer. As the site is an organic demonstration farm, all users must agree to use only organic products for fertilizer and pest control. The site has it’s own water source.

The benefits of a community garden – self-reliance, physical activity and social interaction – are substantial and enhance quality of life for all involved. The garden initiative fosters and strengthens community relationships through public participation.

Anyone interested in securing their own plot in the community garden can reserve their site by contacting 780 963-2777.
Or can email Cathy at cathy@multicentre.org.
