We know finding great content to put on your social media platforms can be difficult. The TSCN pages offer up-to-date daily news and updates on the science and technology that effects our daily lives and knows what teens are interested in. We're sure to have something you'll want to share!

The Gateway Teen Science Café in St. Louis was featured on a PBS segment at a café held at Boeing. The segment brings up the very scary numbers of future STEM needs, and the lack of female STEM professions. It also highlights the important work of Teen Cafés nationwide.  

 

Springtime doesn't really get underway until April, so what better time to head to the Garden State and shine the spotlight on our Harrington Middle School Teen Science Café network member Maureen Barrett.

Getting a program off the ground has been no small task, but with the help of Sanjana, her student leader, cafés are underway in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey.

From robotics, to cardiology, to engineering, the HMS Teen Science Cafés have had great attendance and looking to finish the school year strong. With the experience Maureen has gained, she has a strong foundation to build on for next café season.

On April 25th, the HMS Teen Science Café will welcome Lauren Newbert, a mechanical engineer from the US Navy.

The Aquarium of the Pacific program will be led by Cassandra Davis, Education Volunteer Coordinator and Raelene Child, Youth Volunteer Coordinator. They have been organizing their teen leadership this spring and plan to have their first café later this month.

The Harlem Teen STEAM Club will be lead by Yvonne Thevenot, STEM Master of Arts in Teaching candidate with 10+ years of experience working with youth/young adults residing in diverse, multi-cultural communities. 

With the addition of these two great programs, the TSCN can now be found in 17 states across the country. Our goal is to be in all 50 states by 2018. 

Hijacking Natures Machinery

The Science Discovery Teen Café in Boulder, CO recently held a café on the cellular defense system called CRISPR.

TSCN Member Alex Rose writes:  "Often times, the solutions to our toughest challenges can be taken from nature. In the past couple of years, scientists discovered the mechanism by which a bacterium protects itself against viral infection using a cellular defense system called CRISPR.

CRISPR has many potential applications in science as a tool for genetic manipulation. Boulder’s February Café featured Drs. Tess Eidem, Stephanie Moon, and PhD Candidate Briana Van Treeck of the CU BioFrontiers Institute.

These scientists first gave us a brief overview of what CRISPR/Cas 9 was and described to us how the system worked. We then participated in two skits in order to put what we had learned into action and visualize the various interactions happening inside cells.

Finally, we wrapped up by discussing the ethical implications not only of using CRISPR, but also of genetic manipulation as a whole."
