We are getting very close to finishing our alphabet! With the letter X under our belts, we only have two letters left! Since it was a little tricky finding a lot of words that start with the letter X, we learned several words that have an X somewhere in the word. This was good practice for what they’ll learn next year. Some of our activities included X-ray chalk art, X painting, paper plate fox, and a colorful Xylophone snack with M&M's, frosting, and graham crackers.
We had a great week in kinder class! It was Ww week and Mother Nature even got involved with "wacky, wintery weather"....ish! The Kinder Kids had the opportunity to be in charge of the mass this week, they did all the readings, and what a fantastic job they did! Wow---something to be proud of!
This week first grade worked with words with /or/, /ore/ and /oar/ in reading. We worked on comparing and contrasting and read about many different kinds of weather. In math we worked on telling time to the hour and half-hour and worked with using calendars. Science tied together nicely with our reading this week, as we learned more about weather, the water cycle and different types of clouds.
In Science class we have been learning that the earth rotating around the sun causes day and night. We also learned that the moon gets its light from the sun and that it rotates around the earth and that we see the phases of the moon on a monthly schedule. In addition the seasons of the year are caused by the tilt of the earth. We had fun practicing reading our stories with Grandpa Lowell and Grandma Mary.
It is hard to believe it is the fourth quarter already! The third graders finished up their multiplication and division chapter in math but every day we are going to practice so we become very comfortable. We are starting a new chapter in math that involves time and we will be working on telling time and elapsed time. In science we are learning about heat and something new we learned is that heat rises. In social we are continuing to talk and learn about cultures.
This week in 4th grade we have started to read the novel "Holes", by Louis Sachar. We have been learning all about irony and how interesting it can make a book! In math class we are starting a unit on fractions. We are reviewing numerators and denominators. In religion class we continue to take excerpts from Pope Francis' book to help us understand Jesus and learn about joy.
This week our third-sixth graders were blessed with a presentation from Rookie Champion Auctioneer Brooke Gillespie. The students have been practicing the tongue twisters she taught ever since! The fifth and sixth graders had their first round of contests for speech. Top participants will be competing next week in the school wide speech contest. From there, contestants advancing will compete at the "big" contest with two other schools. This is quite the accomplishment for those students involved! The fifth graders also worked on multiplying fractions this week. They decided this was actually a fun math concept! They also worked on fact and opinion as a reading strategy. It was a busy and fun week!!
It's been a hectic week in sixth grade. We started fourth quarter and Mr P started talking about projects in Science. He's going to have us build volcanoes and write stories about them! So cool! We're learning about measurement in math, so to keep the metric system in order we all had to say "King Henry dieted by drinking chocolate milk" a whole bunch of times. We read a story about Honus Wagner and how valuable a baseball card with his face on it is worth... we looked it up and the last time it was sold somebody paid $2.8 MILLION for it. Lots of us decided to start collecting baseball cards after that. On Thursday, we had our speech competitions in our classes. And to wrap up the week, several of us are participating in the Jazz Fest.
