Dear <<First Name>>,
In the second lesson in our Ask the Minister series, we will explore Heaven, Hell and the Afterlife.
I've had conversations with my husband and with my adult children, that when I die, I'd like a few songs to be sung. One of those songs is Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum.
Here are some of the lyrics.
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
In our western culture many, if not most of us, have been raised with the idea that heaven is a place where we hope to go after death; a place of reward, with streets paved with gold; a place where we will be reunited with all of our loved ones and live in love and plenty for eternity.
And if we don't go to heaven, it more than likely means we'll go to hell; that place of punishment, a place of eternal pain and suffering.
These ideas haven't made sense to me for a very long time. But if you don't believe in a physical heaven and a physical hell, what then?
This Sunday we'll explore heaven, hell and the afterlife.
Big love,
Jude
