Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - April 11th, 2016
Dear Friends:

For those of you who know me personally know that I am conspiracy theory minded - that I firmly believe in UFO’s and Bigfoot for that matter (and lake monsters).  I’ve written about him before, but one of my great heroes is Ed Leedskalnin.  Ed was Latvian born and in the early 1930’s, for reasons that are still mysterious, immigrated to the south of Florida to an area that is today at town called Homestead.  At that time it was just a deserted wasteland of shallow soil and coral reefs, not good for farming.  He bought a 20-acre plot of land and then for the next 20 years or so single-handedly raised monolithic blocks of coral into elaborate sculpture – castles, towers, symbols, and fountains.   This structure, which today is called “The Coral Castle”, was actually named “Rock Gate” by Ed himself.  He lived there alone as a hermit for his entire life.  He would get incredulous visitors who would come and marvel at what he accomplish.  They would ask him; “how did you do it, Ed?” and he would smile and say, “I have discovered the method in which the ancient Egyptians did their work”.  He went to his death never revealing his method but it is known that he did it alone and with no machinery of any kind.

Over the years there has been tons of speculation and theories as to how Ed “did it” – many said that he discovered the principles of anti-gravity and was a master of magnetics.  Indeed, he did write several short essays on magnetism and had his own way of understanding elecromagnetics.  Others speculate that aliens gave him help in order for him to build his structure and that the nature of Coral Castle was to communicate with alien life forces.  Well, just recently, some rare footage of Ed Leedskalnin at work has surfaced and it turns out that it wasn’t anti-gravity or aliens.  It turns out that Ed was a master of using a pulley driven winch.  Furthermore, he was a master sculptor and understood the principle of finding the center of gravity in a massive block.  By balance and leverage, he was able to move enormous stones on his own.  It took him years a daily grinding, lifting and winching but he got it done.

Although I’ll admit that I was disappointed that he hadn’t figured out a way to reverse gravity (honestly, I never thought aliens had anything to do with it), this new revelation about Ed made me really happy.  No magic, no weird science – just two things: 1) some good knowledge and 2) just backbreaking hard work for a long time.  This principle can apply to anything, whether you’re trying to run a jazz club or raise a family or learn a Beethoven sonata or change your own spiritual disposition.  All it takes is persistence and some serious hard work.   Anyone can build their own Coral Castle – just put your nose to the grindstone and work and never quit.  No magic needed, just some gumption and enthusiasm.   You can watch the documentary about Ed Leedskalnin here --> CLICK
