Kona Couch to 5k!
Last month we kicked off a new Couch to 5k training program in Hilo. That program is going strong with new runners training for the Scholarship Run 5k on May 15. This month we're announcing a new Couch to 5k training program in Kona! Starting Tuesday, May 3 at 5 p.m., we'll kick off a training program for Club Rehab's 2nd Annual Ohana Fun Run.
This training program is for beginners, people who haven't been running in a while or anyone who wants a group to train with. No prior running experience is necessary. The group will meet at our Alii Drive location at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays. We will start out gradually with a walk/run program and increase the run intervals until you are ready to run a 5k!
The Club Rehab Ohana Fun Run 5k will take place on Saturday, July 9 at 7:00 a.m. at the Royal Kona Resort. You can register online at www.flpregister.com/194 or at any Big Island Running Company or Club Rehab location. For more information on the training program or the race, contact Melissa at 808-327-9333 or melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com.

New Superfeet OUTSIDE Sandals
Several years ago, Superfeet created a sandal that incorporated their insole technology. Here in Hawaii, that sandal was a huge hit for the support it provided. Changes in manufacturing and production caused them to discontinue the product and work on a new sandal concept. We are happy to finally announce that the new Superfeet OUTSIDE sandal is here!
The OUTSIDE sandal helps absorb impact while supporting and protecting the foot. The deep heel cup and arch support align the foot, while the foot-friendly top layer provides cushion and comfort. The strap is also made of quick-dry synthetic leather for structure and neoprene for comfort. The new design is also lighter and more fashionable than the previous version. The sandal is available in both black and brown for men and women. Your feet definitely deserve to try this sandal!

Stretching with Club Rehab
We're excited to announce a new addition to our group runs in Kona starting this month. On the third Thursday of the month (April 21 this month), Katie Vitousek from Club Rehab will join our runs and lead us in some post-run stretching to keep us in top running form. As a physical therapist, Katie will also be available to answer any questions and give us pointers on how to avoid some of those common running injuries. We look forward to welcoming her and incorporating some of the beneficial stretches that we all know we're supposed to do!

Big Island International Marathon Recap
On March 20, runners in Hilo woke up to rainy skies. But those runners still gathered to start the 19th Annual Big Island International Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k. While the rain was definitely noticeable, for most people it was a pleasant cooling experience and one that you can come to expect from Hilo. Although huge ocean swells earlier in the week caused a last-minute course reroute, the organizers and volunteers were in top form and kept everyone safe, hydrated and encouraged.
Some notable runners made the event interesting, with David Hammes, DJ Blinn, Marie Kuramoto and Cowman all finishing the marathon for the 19th consecutive year to keep their streaks alive. Two teachers from Oregon ended up winning both the men's and women's marathon and setting course records in the process. Keiki from Sunrise Athletics dominated the 5k awards. And of course, many Big Island athletes claimed age group awards, including Big Island Running Company's Alan Ryan in the marathon and Cary Aurand in the 5k.
Congratulations to all of the participants and mahalo to all of the volunteers!
