We're organising a Summer Camp!

Spring is here and I'm delighted to have loads of exciting news for you.  First of all and most excitingly we're going to organise a music summer camp for kids.  It's going to take place in August, be a residential week in a beautiful place about an hour north of London and aimed at young people aged 8-13.  There'll be fiddle workshops, dancing, singing, instrumental sessions and a good time will be had by all.

We've never organised anything like this before before (although we've all done lots of workshop leading in schools and stuff) so if you know someone who's got a family who'd be interested please do forward them this e-mail.  It's going to be headed up by the wonderful Chance Kellner whose idea it was and it's going to be great.  There's more details here.

Also you're all invited to our Spring Party on Saturday 23rd April.  We'll be performing in the museum of Childhood in the day as part of their St George's Day celebrations (various performances between 12:00 and 18:00) and then from around 18:00 we'll all be going to 14 Bacon Street to have a massive session, singing, drinking, dancing and partying!  Come down and join us.

In other news the Sea Shanty Choir have set a new members joining date and there's still chances to do some flatfoot dancing and learn some Swedish tunes before the send of term.

Lastly a few dates to save for the future:  The Sea Shanty Choir are preforming an adaptation of the Rime of the Ancient Marina at Wilton's Music Hall and the EFDSS are organising a massive Ceilidh this summer to celebrate the re-opening of Kennedy Hall after refurbishment.  So much going on!  More details about it all below...
Museum of Childhood Performances

We'll all be celebrating the end of term (no-one's really sure why our term ends two weeks after Easter) with performances at the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green on Sat 23rd April again (St George's Day).  I haven't finalised the timetable but the provisional timetable looks like this:

Provisional Running Order:

12:00 - 12:20 - English Swedish Tunes (c/o Esbjorn Wettermark)
12:20 - 13:00 - Beacon Tree Brass Band
13:00 - 14:30 - Hackney Voices
14:30 - 15:00 - Beacon Tree Brass Band
15:00 - 15:20 - Norfolk Broads (c/o Ellie Dale)
15:30 - 16:00 - Trad Academy Sea Shanty Choir (c/o Pete Truin)
16:10 - 16:30 - Flatfoot dancing (c/o Alice Cade)
16:40 - 17:00 - Hedge Pigs (c/o Elena Fateva)

18:00 - Late -  Trad Academy Spring Party at 14 Bacon Street

Party at Bacon Street

After the performances at the Museum of Childhood the plan is we all go to 14 Bacon Street (where the Scandinavian course has been happening, also known as "The Vintage Emporium", also known as "the cafe", also known as "the shop") for a night of making music, drinking, dancing and having fun.  I was thinking if there's enough people there we could have a flatfooting competition and I'm going to stick some money behind the bar so we can all have a drink on the Trad Academy (like a wedding!).  Hooray!

Calling all flatfooters

If you want to take place in this end of term sharing (and it's really fun), it's not too late to come out of the woodwork and come to Alice's last two classes of term and learn the routine for Saturday 23rd.  I'd also like to invite all previous flatfoot students to come and join us on the day to dance (even if they don't do the routine) and come and join us for the party at 14 Bacon Street!

Swedish Music

Similarly there's still two weeks of Esbjorn's Scandinavian term to go (on Wednesday evenings) and Esbjorn's going to be teaching people some Engelska (literally “English Tunes”) so you can come and perform them at the Museum of Childhood on Saturday 23rd.
Trad Academy Sea Shanty Choir Stuff

So there's now a new members joining date set for Monday 21st June.  It'll probably be at the West Reservoir Center in Stoke Newington.  The choir's so popular now days there aren't many open sessions for new members so if you're keen to get involved make sure you save the date.  There'll be another e-mail about it before then and I'll make sure there's a page on the website too once it's all confirmed.

And if you want to know why the choir's so popular it could be in part that they're now a regular touring international force.  Following up their international debut at Paimpol last year, this summer the choir will be going to Finland to perform at a Sea Shanty Festival on an island in the middle of the Sea. Good times.

Also, the choir are performing at beautiful Wilton's Music Hall again (last year they sold it out).  This time they'll be performing their adaptation of the Rhyme of The Ancient Marina.  Get your ticket now cause I think it'll sell out again.

Celebration Ceilidh

Also in the Summer here the info from EFDSS about their Celebration Ceilidh at Cecil Sharp House, London.

An evening of folk dance delights to celebrate the newly refurbished Kennedy Hall! Participate in lively folk dancing to the dynamic sounds of folk fusion band, Steamchicken, guided by leading caller and MC Andrew Swaine. Be dazzled by a selection of England’s finest morris, sword and clog dancers performing guest spots throughout the evening. Including: Boggart's Breakfast (Border Morris), Laura Connolly (Clog dancer), Fools Gambit (Cotswold Morris), Gog Magog Molly, and Tower Ravens (female Rapper team). Suitable for everyone over 10 years. All dancers from beginners to advanced are welcome. No prior experience needed as all dances are explained in a walkthrough.

Right, that's it for me for now

Look forward to seeing you all soon!

Ed
