The Year of Making at Yorkshire Artspace

Sheffield's Year of Making 2016 not only celebrates creativity but also the city's growing strength in partnership working. Led by the Sheffield Culture Consortium, with main partners Museums Sheffield and the University of Sheffield, the Year of Making 2016 celebrates Sheffield's past, present and future as a city of makers.

There's so much happening in our Year of Making programme this spring! We've recently selected the winning applicants for our Year of Making Microgrants and we'll soon be announcing who's been awarded the Year of Making 2016 High Sheriff Commission that will give a Sheffield city-region artist or maker the chance to work in residence at Manor Lodge Primary School.

The Precious Little Gems commissions are newly installed in the Millennium Gallery, two glorious examples of the fine metalworking that continues to flourish in Sheffield and the result of our long partnership with Sheffield Assay Office and Museums Sheffield.

We're also welcoming applications for our Starter Studio Programmes, which support early career ceramicists and designer silversmiths.

Makers Dozen: In-source is now showing at Made North Gallery and in this spring newsletter, we also feature classes and workshops that our artists and makers are offering to the public, so you can get making yourself.

Precious Little Gems
\ They've done it!

Fenella Watson and Nina Rithalia have created two beautiful pieces of silverware for Museums Sheffield and Sheffield Assay Offices' Precious Little Gems collection.

Both in their second year of our Starter Studio Programme for Designer Silversmiths & Jewellers, Fenella and Nina were selected in December 2015 to receive the annual commissions and have since been working to complete their pieces.

"This commission presented me with an amazing opportunity to explore new techniques and use equipment new to me such as a lathe and milling machine. I did feel the pressure and pushed myself right up until the deadline but now feel very privileged and proud to see my work in the Millennium Gallery." Nina Rithalia

Their finished silverware is now on display in the foyer of Sheffield's Millennium Gallery until 11th September as part of Sheffield's Year of Making 2016.

Year of Making 2016
\ Paul Evans wins commission

Yorkshire Artspace studio holder Paul Evans has been commissioned by Wake Smith Solicitors to produce a painting as part of the Year of Making Sheffield 2016.

They chose Paul, who has a studio at Persistence Works, as they were impressed by the quality of his work and his enthusiasm, creativity and drive. Paul is now finalising his idea for the 1m x 2m canvas which will be completed in acrylic paint and various other materials including finely ground stainless steel, ready for the firm's official office opening event in early May.

"I was really delighted to have been chosen by Wake Smith especially as the competition was so strong alongside artists whose work I really respect. This is an extremely exciting project and I am looking forward to seeing my final concept hanging in the boardroom." Paul Evans

More information about Paul's commission can be found on our website

\ Makers Dozen: In-source

Wednesday 16th March - Saturday 23rd April 2016

‘In-source’ is a project by the Manchester based collective Makers Dozen, which offers the chance for other makers and members of the general public to come and engage in making activity in a series of workshops and live shows that can influence the outcome of the exhibition.

The In-source exhibition is part of a 6-month project that sees the group looking closer at the qualities of each others’ work and considering these qualities for use within their own practice.

During this period of learning, play, and appropriation, events have been held across a range of platforms – from markets to forests to craft fairs. The public has been invited to contribute to and shape the project along the way, through an engagement programme reflecting the makers’ working methods and processes.

Made North Gallery is open Wednesday - Friday 12pm-5pm and Saturdays 11am-4pm. Please visit Made North website for further information.
