Next BSU-NTC president to be introduced April 25
Tentative plans are for the next president of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College to be introduced to both campuses and the Bemidji-area community on April 25.
Dr. Steven Rosenstone, chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, is preparing to recommend a finalist for the position to the MnSCU Board of Trustees, which is scheduled to vote on the recommendation at its April 20 meeting in St. Paul.
If the board approves Rosenstone’s choice, the successful candidate will be presented to faculty, staff, students and community members at three separate events on the following Monday. The BSU presentation is scheduled for 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the Beaux Arts Ballroom, the NTC presentation is scheduled for 10-11 a.m. in NTC Room 327, and the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce will welcome the incoming president during a luncheon starting at 11:30 a.m.
The semi-finalists are Dr. Rodney Hanley, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Fisk University; Dr. Al Thompson, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point; and Dr. Faith Hensrud, provost and vice-chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The three semifinalists visited Bemidji March 21-23.
The new BSU-NTC president will start July 1, following the retirement of current President Richard Hanson.

Campus Events Planned for Hanson Retirement
Students, faculty and staff at Bemidji State and Northwest Technical College will have a chance to extend best wishes to President Richard Hanson at open house receptions on April 28-29.
The BSU reception will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Commons on the building’s lower level. The NTC reception will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the college’s Community Commons. Refreshments will be served at both events.
Hanson will conclude his six-year tenure on June 30.

College of Business dean named president at Missouri's State Technical College
Dr. Shawn Strong, dean of the College of Business for the last three years, has accepted a position as president of State Technical College in Missouri.
"Shawn has worked tirelessly with the Bemidji community and region to solidify partnerships with business and industry leaders," said Dr. Martin Tadlock, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs. "He was instrumental in working with Northwest Technical College faculty and the BSU-NTC administration to transform NTC’s academic programming."

Beech named director of international studies beginning in Fall 2016
Dr. Thomas Beech, professor of political science, will serve as Bemidji State's director of international studies beginning this fall. In this role, he will report to the provost’s office for all programmatic decisions related to the international studies program. He will also work with members of the International Studies Council to provide international opportunities for BSU students and to assist the International Program Center to provide outstanding experiences for our international students.

MnSCU Board of Trustees approves changes to mobile device policy
In late March, the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees approved language changes to Board Procedure 5.22.2, which governs use of cellular and other mobile computing devices. Part 7 of the procedure addresses use of employee-owned devices for state business. Under procedure 5.22.2, employees who use personal devices for state business may be required to surrender their device to the system office under certain circumstances. Anyone who uses a personal device for business purposes is encouraged to review the procedure.

Parking permits for 2016-17 still available
Parking permits for the 2016-17 academic year are still available. New this year is an online pre-registration form available on the Public Safety website. Pre-registration does not guarantee a permit. Several permits have limited availability and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration must be completed by making payment with the Cashiers Office on the second floor of Deputy Hall or by calling the office at 2045.

Changes made to policy governing non-motorized transport on campus
In January, changes were passed to the university's Motorized and Non-Motorized Modes of Transportation Safety Policy, which governs the use of personal transportation vehicles on campus or in other facilities under the university's care and control. The policy allows the use of skates, non-motorized scooters, skateboards and bicycles outside of buildings and tunnels. Other modes of motorized and non-motorized transportation, such as Segways, motorized scooters, mopeds or hoverboards, are prohibited on university property. Rosenstone retiring as MnSCU chancellor in July 2017
Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Chancellor Steven Rosenstone announced April 8 that he will retire upon completion of his current contract in July 2017. Dr. Rosenstone, who will be nearly 66 years old when he completes his current contract, has led the system of seven state universities and 30 community and technical colleges since 2011.
During his tenure, Rosenstone has been and continues to be an unwavering advocate for the power of education to create transformational opportunity for students and to reduce racial and economic disparities across the state.

Aramark food service contract renewed
Aramark will continue to serve as the dining services provider for Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College under a new 10-year contract beginning July 1. The contract was approved by the MnSCU Board of Trustees on March 16.
Aramark has a long and solid history of providing excellent dining services at BSU and, more recently, at NTC. Aramark’s contract includes an ongoing sustainability plan that embraces participation with students and others in a local food donation program, as well as facility improvements in Walnut Hall, BSU’s Lakeside Dining and NTC’s Grant Avenue Café. The contract also will enable the university to pursue other new programs such as a collaborative "The Best You @ BSU" initiative focused on student and employee wellness.

Award-winning films announced from this year's Headwaters Film Festival
BSU's Headwaters Film Festival recognized “Am Fenster,†by German filmmaker Tim Ullrich, as the winner of its 2016 international film competition, held as part of the university’s fourth film festival, March 31-April 1.
Films by students from Denmark and College Station, Texas, rounded out the festival’s top three honorees, and “Demonsâ€, by Abdullah Al Maawali from the United Kingdom, was the audience choice award winner.

Hosts selected for 2016 summer Neilson Foundation internships
Seventeen Bemidji-area employers will host more than two dozen Bemidji State students for paid internships this summer as part of the university’s continuing internship partnership with the George W. Neilson Foundation.
Support from the foundation provides up to 50 percent of an intern’s funding, up to $2,500, with the participating business contributing the remaining 50 percent.

Bemidji State joins Campus Compact's Campus Civic Action Plan
President Richard A. Hanson joined more than 80 higher education leaders in Boston on March 20 to celebrate the launch of the Campus Compact’s Campus Civic Action Plan. Hanson joins more than 350 Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors who have signed the Campus Compact 30th Anniversary Action Statement, a document which the compact says “contains strong language about the public obligations of higher education that commits campuses to taking specific steps to deepen their engagement for the benefit of students, communities, and the broader public.â€

As part of Information Technology Services’ regular “Words with Nerds†series, Kody Hagen and Kelly Knapp will present a one-hour training session that includes a review of the Cranium Café face-to-face messaging system that is now available to anyone at BSU. MnSCU Continues Work on New System Branding
A proposal to change the visual identity and possibly the name of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system will be presented to the MnSCU Board of Trustees on April 19.
Noelle Hawton, the system’s chief marketing and communications officer, will recommend a change based on the work of Padilla CRT, a public relations agency, with guidance from a system-wide steering committee and input shared last month during presentations on several MnSCU campuses, including BSU.
Under consideration is a shortening of the system’s name to “Minnesota State†and a new logo that is still being finalized. The impetus for change has been the cryptic nature of the MnSCU acronym and research that found a lack of public understanding about the system’s scope and mission.

Student scholarship conference spotlights student research
Nearly 250 Bemidji State students representing a broad range of academic disciplines shared the results of their academic research as part of BSU’s 17th annual Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference on April 6. Dr. Roberto Duran, a Utah-based psychologist who is a nationally renowned expert on social and historical trauma, gave the conference’s keynote address.The Office of Communications and Marketing spent the day visiting several presentations and sharing highlights on its various social media channels.

LaFond wins student conservationist award
BSU graduate student Lynda LaFond was presented with The Wildlife Society’s 2015 Student Conservationist Award during the Minnesota chapter’s annual meeting, held in Mankato, Minn., in February. LaFond, an Akeley, Minn., native pursing a master’s degree in biology, won the award given to a wildlife student at a Minnesota college who shows high scholastic achievement and promise as a future wildlife professional.

Kiecker wins MG Exhibit Design undergraduate scholarship
Ashley Kiecker, a senior in the art and design program, has won the 2016 MG Exhibit Design Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship. Kiecker was selected based on projects included in a design portfolio as well as a brief written essay on the skills she believes are most important for being a successful designer.

Students elect 2016-17 Student Senate
Online balloting for Bemidji State’s 2016-17 Student Senate, held March 29-April 3, has elected 14 new senators, including president Kayley Schoonmaker and vice president Joshua Lively.
The incoming senate will select a secretary and treasurer and chair positions this fall. Following a 2014 amendment to senate bylaws, students no longer choose co-presidents.
Schoonmaker, who will succeed Brittany Hull, is a junior business administration major from Grand Rapids, Minn. Lively, who will succeed John Ellingboe, is a freshman from Abington, Mass., majoring in computer science and political science.

Second Green and White auction set for April 16
The biannual Green and White Dinner & Auction to support Beaver Athletics will be held April 16 at the Sanford Center. The event begins with dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by a live auction at 7:30 p.m. The inaugural auction in 2014 raised more than $100,000 to support BSU student-athletes.
