Spring 2016 Newsletter

We need to hear from you.  Because our executive director Susie Braithwaite is representing International Village on several committees and in the media, it is very important that we hear your thoughts on a few things pertaining to Light Rail Transit (LRT).

Please take a couple of minutes to fill out the online survey at the following link:

Light Rail Transit (LRT) Update
Susie sits on the LRT Sub-Committee as an advisor and is a member of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce LRT Task Force.  At the March 29th LRT Sub-Committee meeting at the City of Hamilton, it was confirmed by city representatives that any information leaked to the press, is speculation at this point.  The City of Hamilton will be unveiling the initial design plans for LRT in May.  Construction is slated to begin in late 2019/early 2020.  At the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce LRT Task Force meeting held on March 30th, the task force was joined by Patti Brooks, executive director for the Uptown Waterloo BIA and her staff.  Their BIA is two months into LRT construction.  Below are some photos of the construction in Uptown Waterloo.  Susie will be taking a trip up to Waterloo and Kitchener in May to tour the BIAs and meet with businesses affected by the construction.

Some tips from other BIAs who are currently under LRT construction or who have gone through 'big digs':
  • Start collecting your customer's email addresses now so that you have direct contact with them during construction.  You will need to direct them to and from your business as construction schedules can change daily.
  • Be willing to 'think out of the box' as to how you will promote your business during construction.
  • Be willing to go to your customer if need be.
  • Stay positive.  Consumers will be loyal to businesses that give them a reason to be.
Meeting of Members LRT Update

The International Village BIA board will be hosting a series of public meetings open to all International Village BIA members throughout the initial phases and into the construction of LRT.

Up Your Alley Project - Phase 2

The City of Hamilton has funded a phase 2 of the 'Up Your Alley Project'.  This project will fund a part-time alleyway project coordinator (2 hours a day in the Downtown Hamilton BIA 9am-11am and 2 hours a day in International Village BIA 11am-1pm).  The Alleyway Project Coordinator will be working with business and property owners along the North alleyway from Wellington to James St. to ensure proper garbage pick-up times are followed, dumped garbage is reported, beautification and maintenance of the alleyway and will work closely with the Hamilton Police Services to make this alleyway safer.

We are pleased to welcome back to International Village, Emily Walsh.  Emily worked with the BIA for 5 months in 2013 on events, beautification and maintenance and assisted Susie with day to day functions of the BIA.  We are thrilled to welcome Emily to the position of 'Up Your Alley Project Coordinator'.  Emily started on April 4th and will be with us for a 2 year contract.  I'm sure you will all get to know Emily over that time and work closely with her to improve the alleyway on the North side of King St. E. from Wellington to Mary.

If you see something that needs to be reported in the alleyway, please email Emily directly at upyouralleyway@gmail.com Also, follow Emily on twitter at @UpYourAlleyYHM
