Posted by J. Todd Foster on April 4, 2016 Republicans claimed the top 11 spots among congressional members holding town hall meetings during the first quarter of 2016. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who is up for re-election for his Senate seat following a failed campaign for the presidency, led the way with 50 town halls, while Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) was the House leader with 39 between Jan. 1 and March 31, LegiStorm records show. The top Democrat among town hall hosts was Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) with 14 — the 12th highest total on the list. The top Democratic senator in town halls was Jeff Merkley of Oregon; he held eight in the first quarter of this year. While a good chunk of the events were simply a chance for constituents to interact with their representatives, some were more focused on a particular policy area. For instance, Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.) held a veterans-oriented town hall and tour of the new Charlotte VA Health Care Center last month, while Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.) co-hosted a telephone town hall discussion with federal and local government officials on temporary housing of child immigrants in Lakewood, Colo., back in January. In all, there were 843 town halls in the first quarter of 2016, compared to 765 last year and 688 in the first three months of 2014. After Paul and Cramer, the rest of the top 10 town hall leaders — all from the middle of the country — were Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.), Rep. David Young (R-Iowa), Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) and Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.).
