POSTHARVEST LOSS (PHL) ANIMATIONS

For the past several years, SAWBO has been developing Postharvest Loss animations with the ADM Institute for the Prevention of Postharvest Loss. Today we are highlighting some of our past animations, publications, and a press release that fall into this category.

POSTHARVEST LOSS: DRYING GRAIN

These animations show techniques and tools that can be used to dry grain properly.

PHL: HOW TO BUILD A SOLAR GRAIN DRYER

This video explains how to build a solar grain dryer. Drying grain reduces the chance for mold growth in the grain, which will increase its storage life as well as ensuring that it will sell at a higher price.

PHL: HOW TO USE A SOLAR GRAIN DRYER

This video explains how to dry grains after harvest by using a solar grain dryer. This solar grain dryer will speed up the drying process greatly.

PHL: SALT TESTING FOR GRAIN MOISTURE LEVELS 2D

This animation explains a method to test if your grain has a low enough moisture level for you to store it. This technique utilizes salt to help determine the moisture level in your grain.

PHL: SALT TESTING FOR GRAIN MOISTURE LEVELS 3D

Completed in a 3D style, this animation explains the same techniques as our animation, PHL: Salt Testing for Grain Moisture Levels in 2D.

POSTHARVEST LOSS: GRAIN STORAGE

These animations focus on the storage of grain. The most important concepts we present here are to keep your grain completely dry and to keep it safe from contamination while storing it.

PHL: STORAGE OF GRAIN

This animation explains how to store grains using best practices for bag storage. It deals with how to prepare the grain for storage, transport the bags, and how to properly store the bags.

PHL: BAG STACKING FOR SAFE STORAGE OF GRAIN

This animation explains the best practices for bag storage of grain using a bag stacking technique.

POSTHARVEST LOSS: GRAIN TRANSPORTATION

These animations focus on the transportation of grain. During transportation, it is very important that your grain does not get wet or damaged.

PHL: BULK TRANSPORTATION OF GRAIN

It is very important to take the proper precautions when transporting grain or seeds in bulk. This animation explains the best practices for this task.

PHL: TRANSPORTATION OF BAGS OF GRAIN

Sharp objects or surfaces with sharp edges can rip and tear your bags open easily during transportation. This animation explains best practices during preparation and transportation of bags of grain in order to minimize postharvest loss.

POSTHARVEST LOSS: BUSINESS CONCEPTS

These animations highlight a different side of postharvest loss prevention, the business behind selling crops. When the best business practices are used, and the crop is processed properly, you greatly reduce wasted crop and crop that won't sell. These animations were funded by the ADM Institute for the Prevention of Postharvest LossCTA, and RONGEAD.

PREVENTION OF PHL: AGRICULTURAL VALUE CHAIN

An agricultural value chain is a system of people that work in various stages in crop production. The value chain contains every person that works to get the crops from the farm where they were planted, to the consumer that will end up eating them.

PREVENTION OF PHL: SUPPLY AND DEMAND

This video shows why the prices change for agricultural products. Many factors influence the price of an agricultural commodity. A farmer should be aware of all the factors that affect the supply and demand of his crop, as these will influence the price.

SHEA NUT PROCESSING

This animation shows how to reduce PHL in the shea value chain pathway with a Research for Development (R4D) innovation that helps women at the beginning of the value chain.

QUALITY SHEA NUTS: BEST PRACTICES FOR PRODUCTION

Shea is an important product for women in the shea belt, which ranges from Senegal in West Africa to Ethiopia in East Africa. The following animation demonstrates processing shea nuts for better quality storage.

THE EVOLUTION OF SHEA BUTTER'S "PARADOX OF PARADOXA" (...)

This publication from the SAWBO team deals with the shea value chain and the potential for educational solutions to reduce PHL in this commodity.

TEFF ANIMATIONS

One way to reduce PHL is to plant fewer seeds while increasing the production of the crop. Row planting and line planting of teff seeds dramatically reduces the amount of seeds farmers need for their next cropping season, thereby leaving them with more teff seed to eat or sell.

ROW PLANTING OF TEFF

Teff is an important cereal crop in Ethiopia. One-tenth of the amount of teff seeds are used in row planting, as compared to the traditional planting approach, resulting in significantly more efficient use of teff grains in agricultural production.

TEFF TRANSPLANTING TECHNOLOGIES

Traditional planting approaches require high inputs and result in low yields, including postharvest loss due to the high levels of seeds used in planting. This video describes a row transplanting technique that reduces input costs and increases yield.

EDUCATION BY ANIMATION: VIDEOS REACHING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ETHIOPIAN FARMERS

SAWBO's goal is to create content that other groups can use in their educational programs through their own deployment pathways.
