Not all fish oils are created equal

Hi everyone,

Firstly, I just wanted to highlight to you what a lucky lass I am! Two great children (with grandbaby on the way) and a loving partner who keeps us all in line! Being adults themselves our children bring with them their own partners. We also have close friends (deemed family) and their children (and grandbabies) and so forth. In short my family just keeps getting bigger and bigger!

Social connectedness describes the relationships people have within their families, workplaces and communities. Loneliness is known to take a huge toll on one’s mental health. When connections break down or are absent people can become low in mood, isolated, increase weight and start to turn to addiction such as alcohol, gaming or drugs. Sadly, in today’s world, loneliness is only too prevalent.

Unfortunately, there is no herb or supplement that can help with this. We need to help each other in this world of technology which ironically has decreased social interaction or our ability to do so. This month my challenge to you is to put down the computer, laptop, phone (after reading this very interesting newsletter) and go and connect for real! Strengthen those relationships and remember, it’s knowing the details in each other’s lives NOT the 6-month summary.

Until next time
Deirdre

Keep cool and “waist” away!

We are going into the winter months and for many of us weight loss becomes just that little bit harder. Winter weight loss requires a very different set of foods and behaviours than dieting in warmer months. Seasonally our body wants to protect us from the cold and lack of food so we naturally crave warming soups, cooked foods, sugars and fats.

Just because we are coming into winter does not mean that you need to give up on your weight loss goals. Be strong and If you need a hand give us a call.

"I went to Deidre with a number of health related issues related to being overweight. With her help I have lost close to 50kgs and I feel like a new person..... Thank you so much."
---Phil

Tips to keep the kilos at bay over winter:
1. Use “warming” foods in your meals. These include things like chilli, pepper, turmeric, and curry based herbs.
2. Eat weight reducing fats such as coconut oil and avocado. These are healthy fats and are so much better for weight loss than saturated fats such as too much meat, junk foods etc. Fatty fish such as salmon, sardines also have their place.
3. Sleep! The days are shorter meaning the daylight hours are less. Going to bed a couple of hours before midnight means that you will feel better when you get up in the morning. This also means you can take advantage of the daylight as soon as it reaches you J
4. Eat more of the nourishing, rich and hearty food such as soups and stews rather than puddings, breads and gravies. (Leave the yummies for sometimes)

Beautiful, bonny beef broth

Ingredients:
1 large spring onion or small leek
1 stalk of celery (medium)
½ medium carrot
4 large leaves of kale or bok choy, roughly chopped
½ cup mushrooms
Beef bones (preferably with lots of meat on it)
Ginger to taste
1 clove of garlic
1 medium onion
Chilli flakes (optional) to taste
Salt and pepper
Bay leaf

Preparation:
1. Combine all in a large pot and cover with enough cold water to cover.
2. Bring to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer with the lid on for one hour and reduce to at least half.
3. Turn off the heat, give your broth time to cool to a point where you can comfortably handle it, then strain through a fine meshed strainer. You can use a large spoon or spatula to squeeze liquid and nutrients out of soft veggies.
4. This broth can be refrigerated for a week in sealed glass jars.

Fish oils are a guinea pigs best friend

Animal studies are often used for research and to be honest I really can’t stand it! However, on the up side the revelations that these studies provide are often very useful. Guinea pigs (cute little furry animals that squeak) naturally develop osteoarthritis. A group of these popular little rodents were fed a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids to determine the effects of fish oils on the development and progression of osteoarthritis.

In conclusion:  There was strong evidence to suggest that omega-3 not only helps prevent osteoarthritis, but also slows its progression.

Deirdre says:
Fish oils, in my opinion and experience, are better for osteoarthritis than flax seed oil but for vegetarians, flax oil remains a viable alternative. Most diets in the developed world are Omega 6 rich and don’t have enough omega 3. This imbalance may be assisted by the intake of fish oils and in this instance will be of benefit in osteoarthritis.
