President's Note

Dear TACL Family,

Happy July 4th! Hope you had a fun and relaxing long weekend!  In Q2 of 2016, we celebrated Asian American Heritage month and Taiwanese American Heritage Week in May.  How did you celebrate your heritage?  Tweet us @taclorg to share.

In May, TAP-LA hosted its first ever Taiwan-US Investment Conference with over 500 attendees who came together to hear from TA rockstars like Frank Yang (CEO of Simple Human), Keith Kaplan (CEO of Tesla Foundation) and William Wang (CEO of Vizio). In June, LYF Camp brought together over 170 campers, counselors, staff and volunteers to Walker Creek Ranch in Petaluma, CA (Norcal) to explore their TA identity and enjoy some summertime camp fun.

Read more about what we did last quarter below (including signing a letter to support affirmative action)!

As always, we want to hear from you, so if you have thoughts, suggestions, comments, etc., feel free to email us at tacl@tacl.org and remember to “Like” us on Facebook.

Best,

Jacqui Wu
TACL National President

The theme for this year’s LYF Camp was “When LYF Gives You Lemons,” and the campers worked on their problem-solving skills and leadership skills, while exploring Taiwanese American culture.

TACL Supports Affirmative Action

TACL SIGNS LETTER IN SUPPORT OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION:
Affirmative Action Does Not Imply Racial Quotas

In May, a coalition of 132 Asian American organizations was expected to file a complaint with the Departments of Education and Justice against Brown, Dartmouth and Yale University to end affirmative action, because they claim that quotas are hurting Asian Americans in the college application process. TACL does not agree with their claim that affirmative action implies racial quotas and signed a letter along with 150 Asian-American organizations in support of affirmative action.  Check out the letter and list of 150 organizations here.

6 Ways TAP-Austin Was Jammin’ @SXSW with TAP Jam

Every March, SXSW (South by Southwest) takes over downtown Austin with one of the largest music festivals to showcase music from various genres and countries. SXSW hosted an official “Taiwan Beats” night, where we got to listen to the entire lineup from Taiwan. To increase exposure for these artists, TAP-Austin hosted a separate day-show, TAP JAM. TAP-LA Brings Together Enterpreneurs and Investors at 1st Annual Taiwan-US Investment Conference

At the end of May, TAP-LA hosted an Investment Conference that boasted over 500 attendees with industry hotshot speakers like Frank Yang (CEO of Simple Human), Keith Kaplan (CEO of Tesla Foundation) and William Wang (CEO of Vizio). In fact, it was so cool that all the West Coast TACL Program Presidents (TAP and PIP) traveled from Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego and local Los Angeles to attend. TACL alumni Candice Hung and John Chiang (yes, California State Treasurer is a TACL alumnus) attended the conference as well!  Here is our recap of the star-studded conference.
