FEATURED ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Football Players Health Study Introduces iPhone App 

TeamStudy, the first app dedicated to player health, utilizes Apple's ResearchKit platform to conduct research in this critical area. TeamStudy allows researchers to study the health of former NFL players by following them in their daily lives, focusing on cognition, cardiac health, and pain and mobility. Both former players and the public are invited to download the app. 

 

Advanced Microscopic and Nanoscale Technologies
April 11, 2016

If you are interested in applying for this funding opportunity (see details under “Funding” in this newsletter), you must attend an event on April 11 at the Biological Labs Building, 16 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, from 2:30-4:00pm. This event will include an optional Q&A session and tours of the Harvard Center for Biological Imaging (HCBI) and the Center for Nanoscale Systems (CNS) from 4:00-5:30pm. Further information about the event will be available after registration. If you are unable to attend this educational event, you are required to meet with a representative of HCBI and/or CNS to learn about the equipment and technologies available. Registration is required.

HARVARD CATALYST EDUCATION     

Maximizing the Mentee-Mentor Relationship
May 24-25, 2016
Applications due April 15

This two-day course will help emerging clinical and translational investigators navigate the complexities of the mentoring dynamic. With an emphasis on the perspective of the mentee, the course will explore the lifecycle of mentoring relationships through the presentation of case studies, lectures, as well as interactive sessions. Each session will address critical issues such as expectations and responsibilities, pitfalls and challenges, communication, and career development. Participants will learn how to direct their own mentee-mentor relationships, as well as understand the impact these relationships can have on both personal and academic success.

 

Models of Disease (MoD) Boot Camp, July 11-29, 2016
Application due May 13

Before starting their basic/translational research fellowships, clinical fellows and residents have the opportunity to participate in the MoD Boot Camp. This popular three-week course is offered annually, and includes group activities such as interactive lectures presented by leading faculty on their recent discoveries, reviews of topical updates in biomedical science by leaders in academia, and panel discussions, among others.

LGBT Bullying Symposium: Translating Research to Action to Improve the Health of All Youth
May 10, 2016

This symposium, hosted by Harvard Catalyst’s Health Disparities Research Program and other sponsors, brings together researchers, clinicians, community members, city and state representatives, and school leaders to generate dialogue on how best to reduce LGBT bullying and meet the needs of LGBT youth experiencing bullying. Up to $50,000 for Proposals using Advanced Microscopic and Nanoscale Technologies

Big Ideas, Small Features: Utilizing Advanced Microscopic and Nanoscale Technologies: Calling all biomedical investigators - funding will support the innovative application of light and electron microscopy, nanoscale fabrication, and nanoscale analysis technologies for big ideas that will advance clinical healthcare. KL2 Catalyst Medical Research Investigator Training (CMeRIT) Award

The KL2/CMeRIT program offers advanced training through educational activities and mentored research for senior fellows and junior faculty in clinical and translational research. The award provides two years of salary support at 50-75 percent of the awardee’s institutional salary base within NIH guidelines. Read the Spotlight to learn more about the program. National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Eli Lilly Externship Opportunity in Clinical and Translational Sciences

This is an opportunity for an externship in clinical and translational sciences at Eli Lilly and Company for scholars, trainees and investigators of the NCATS, Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program. The externship will support the training and education of participants in techniques and principles needed to pursue research in one of the world's premiere pharmaceutical companies. Education and training will be team oriented and provide a firm grounding in one or more of the areas of interest of Eli Lilly. Scientific, theoretical and practical knowledge will include an appreciation of toxicology, regulatory, and commercialization challenges in developing and bringing a biotechnology or pharmaceutical product to patients. HARVARD CATALYST RESOURCES 

Biostatistical Consulting

Drawing on a team of highly skilled biostatisticians from affiliate institutions, the program offers consultations and expertise on a range of relevant areas to researchers as they launch new clinical and translation projects. The program also promotes the development and mentoring of Harvard Catalyst biostatisticians, as well as biostatistical training for clinical investigators. Statistical services focus on clinical and translational projects in the early stages of development. These services include grant submission/resubmission, IRB submission, protocol review, design for non-grant project/feasibility consultation, education on a statistical topic, analysis planning and advice, and assistance with response to a manuscript/journal reviewer. Please request a consultation well before your deadline.

The Harvard Life Lab: A New Home for Harvard Life Sciences Startups

The Harvard Innovation Labs is proud to announce a shared laboratory space for high-potential life sciences and biotech startups founded by Harvard faculty, alumni, students, and postdoctoral scholars opening in fall 2016. Once construction is completed, the 15,000-square-foot fully-equipped and permitted laboratory and office space, called the Harvard Life Lab will support a curated community of early-stage life sciences and biotech companies on Harvard’s Allston campus, adjacent to the Harvard i-lab and Launch Lab. Ventures selected to join the Life Lab will have access to dedicated lab space, as well as permits, waste handling, and all common lab equipment needed for life sciences research.
