WHERE: Fort Calgary, 750 – 9 Avenue SE
RSVP: http://www.calgarylearns.com/rsvp

Agenda:

1 – 2:30 PM    Indigenous Adult Literacy
  • PART I: David Bouchard will speak to the reality of Indigenous chances in the current educational situation, from the curriculum to evaluation, centered on one’s ability to read. Until today, Indigenous students have been at a crippling disadvantage. With the Truth and Reconciliation Commission findings, things can and should improve.
  • PART II: Investing in Indigenous Literacy and Foundational Learning for Indigenous Adults. We know that services and programs allocated to the Indigenous community are not always delivered in culturally meaningful and defined ways. The approaches to learning are different among Indigenous people, and the lack of literacy impacts individuals and families in the long term on multiple levels. Our overall learning objectives are to develop a culturally relevant model of “literacy” for Indigenous people; ensure that future-funded programs are delivering relevant, authentic and effective programs that address historical impacts; and co-create an investment strategy that is culturally and socially relevant which also meets the funding requirements of Calgary Learns.
  • PART III: Q&A and feedback from the audience

3 – 3:30 PM    Calgary Learns' Annual General Meeting
Hear about our year, elect our new Board, eat delicious food, mingle with your community!

4 – 6 PM    The LOLAs (The Life Of Learning Awards)
Keynote speaker: David Bouchard, who will talk about his work life as a Métis author and his dream of creating books in the Indigenous languages.

The LOLAs celebrate and honour the contributions and accomplishments in Calgary’s adult learning field. The LOLAs are presented to outstanding educators, programs, supporters and learners to recognize their dedication and spirit. They highlight the value of foundational learning and the differences education makes in our community.
