FEATURED STORY

BCAC Airports Workshop & AGM

From Anahim Lake to Abbotsford, from Cranbrook to Campbell River, British Columbia is home to 39 certified airports, a testament to the importance of the aviation industry to the health of this province.

More than 100 senior airport, airline, aviation authority, government and related business executives will gather in Nanaimo from April 25-27 for the annual event. The theme for the three days of meetings, workshops and networking is Shaping Our Future.

“It’s important to provide opportunities for airports and related service providers to discuss current issues and build on business relationships,” says Candace McKibbon, the B.C. Aviation Council’s Executive Director.

“Industry leaders will share their innovations, knowledge and insights—all focused on advancing B.C.’s aviation sector.”

Just some of the focus areas will be:
  • Maximizing revenues and funding
  • Meeting increased demands for security and training
  • Planning and regulatory compliance
As in previous years, speakers will share best practices and discuss holistic strategies for dealing with these topics.

Conair Aerial Firefighting

This month we visited Conair Aerial Firefighting’s base in Abbotsford and spent some time with Jeff Berry, Director of Business Development. A tour of the facility included three large hangars full of aerial firefighting equipment and a “bee hive” of busy workers prepping the aircraft for the fire season. The Government’s decision to retain a Next Generation RJ85 air tanker for the 2016 fire season has Conair extremely pleased. To date, 5 aircraft conversions have been completed and Conair is in the process of converting the 6th – which you can see mid-conversion in their hangar.

Conair has just begun the planning and design phase to incorporate technological enhancements to the existing Q400. When completed, Conair will have the most versatile, 10,000 litre airtanker combination on the market today. The system will incorporate an advanced Conair retardant delivery system that has been tested in France for the past 10 seasons with the newly designed Bombardier Q400 cargo combination aircraft.

It was also recently announced that a M.O.U. for a Conair/CAE RJ85 wildfire training and simulation centre to be built in BC. Conair currently sends prospective pilots and pilots in need of recurrent training, to a RJ85 Class D Simulator in Switzerland. The establishment of the training facility in B.C. allows Conair to train locally which reduces costs and increases access to world class training. Once the flight training centre is established it will create many new job opportunities including Fight Simulator trainers, Simulator Technicians and Operations Centre Staff.

BCAC would like to congratulate Conair on all their recent successes and thank them for their continued support of BCAC and Aviation and Aerospace in B.C.

BC Pilots to Fly at Vimy Ridge 100th Anniversary

BC Pilots to fly at Vimy Ridge 100th Anniversary Celebrations in France

Vimy Flight was formed four years ago by 4 retired Canadian military pilots who had acquired replica Nieuport XI World War One scout aircraft and were flying them as a hobby. While so engaged they pondered the possibility of flying over the Vimy memorial in France for the upcoming centennial celebration to honour those who fought in that conflict. Their imagination was piqued by a 1936 photo which depicted bi-planes flying over the Vimy memorial during the opening ceremony in July 1936. A plan was formulated to replicate this event during the dedication ceremony scheduled for 9 April 2017 in France.

With the cooperation of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, the Canadian Geographic magazine and with the collaboration of the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum the plan, called "A Nation Soars", was designed by Sound Ventures Productions telling the story in three segments. The first, titled “Drawn to Victory” will be a made-for-TV movie about the use of aviation in creating maps of the battlefield. Large scale maps will be made for inclusion in a cross-Canada trek in company with the aircraft. These maps, measuring some 8 by 10 meters, will be set up in gymnasiums or sports centers to show the public how aerial reconnaissance and maps were used to great success during the war.
