HARCA HELPERS: a volunteer newsletter

HARCA HELPERS

A Volunteer Newsletter

April 2016

Feeling joggy? Well that's handy as the month of April hosts the London Marathon! Even if you can't face dragging your legs for a gruelling 26.2 miles perhaps those running will inspire you to put on your pumps and get active. This newsletter presents some great training opportunities, lovely Spring time events and in Volunteer Corner we have a double whammy this month with the fantastic Halima and Roger.

As many of your know this will be my last newsletter for a while as I'm expecting a baby any day now. The newsletter will continue and I hope you find it a useful source of information and opportunities. All the best with your volunteering for the rest of 2016!

Volunteer Corner
Roger Taylor: Poplar HARCA Events Volunteer

What kind of volunteering do you do here?
Setting up tables and gazebos for events and speaking with the general public to complete surveys. Wherever I can help.

What keeps you coming back?
I keep getting invited! I like the Poplar HARCA ethos and the way they are knitting the community together with events and activities, they seem to do more than most housing associations. I also like working and mixing with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

What can we find you doing when you're not volunteering?

I cycle to keep fit and it's social too. I volunteer a lot, it's a nice substitute to working whilst I'm in retirement and I enjoy taking part in all the big London events from the Olympics to Chinese New Year. I'm also involved in two environmental projects to maintain and restore ponds. One of which has been abandoned for a long time so I spend my time trudging in the mud removing discarded tree logs and planting pond loving plants to increase wildlife, I also help out with some carpentry.

Any hidden talents?
I speak Spanish! I used to be a tour leader for an adventure company which took me all over the world and fortunately spent two years in Cuba.
Halima Ali: Spotlight

What kind of volunteering do you at Spotlight?
I do youth support volunteering and I love it! I get to talk to everyone and I like to listen to young peoples stories.

What keeps you coming back?
Each day is different, I get to experience a variety of things and each time I volunteer it gets better!

What can we find you doing when you're not volunteering?
Studying, working and hanging out with my family. I have a big family and we spend a lot of time together, we often do things spontaneously like visit out grandmother at midnight or go to the cinema at the spur of the moment.

Any hidden talents?
I write poetry and have run my own poetry blog for about five years now... check it out here!

Do you give us three words that sum you up?
Agh that's hard to do, I would say Passionate, Weird (just a little bit in a good way) and Quirky
