56th Rankine Lecture 2016

The 56th Rankine Lecture, Geotechnics and Energy, was delivered by Professor Richard Jardine from Imperial College London on 16th of March 2016.
The Rankine Lecture is widely viewed as the most prestigious of the invited lectures in geotechnics. It commemorates WJM Rankine, Professor of Civil Engineering at Glasgow University, who was one of the first engineers in the UK to make a significant contribution to soil mechanics. He is best known for his theory for the earth pressure on retaining walls.
This 56th Rankine Lecture focused on the pressing problem of ensuring vital energy supplies while also recognising, mitigating and dealing with the climate consequences of fossil fuel consumption. The Lecture emphasised that integrating geology and rigorous analysis with advanced laboratory and field experiments is the key to resolving the complex geotechnical problems raised; careful full-scale field monitoring is also essential to checking reliability in practice.

ISSMGE webinar lecture
The ISSMGE webinar lecture on Multiphysical Processes and Design of Thermo-Active Foundations was recently delivered by Professor Lyesse Laloui. This lecture presented an analysis of the multiphysical phenomena and mechanisms governing the thermo-mechanical behaviour of energy piles based on the results of a series of full-scale in-situ tests, laboratory experiments and numerical analyses.

International Workshop

Prof. Lyesse Laloui is pleased to announce the organisation of the International Workshop on “Advances in Laboratory Testing and Modelling of Soils and Shales”, Swiss Alps, 18-20 January 2017.
This International Workshop is a 2.5-day event promoting the exchange of ideas, practices and state of the art about laboratory testing and modelling of soils and shales. It aims at bringing together researchers working on soils and shales, in order to stimulate the debate around recent advances in laboratory testing and modelling of these geomaterials.
You are invited to submit abstracts for consideration, for both oral and poster presentations, related to the technical themes of the Workshop. Deadline for abstracts: 15.05.2016.

The 19th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (19th ICSMGE) will be held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, from September 17 to 22, 2017 (http://www.icsmge2017.org/about/about_01.asp). The theme of the 19th ICSMGE is Unearth the Future, Connect Beyond. It has the aspiration to bridge the gaps between past and future, between young and senior engineers, and between developing and developed nations among others.
Please note that Member Societies should be collecting abstracts (check the deadline) for consideration for inclusion as papers in the conference, under one of six principal topics:

6th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2015

The 6th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials was held in Buenos Aires (Argentina) from 15th to 18th of November 2015. The Technical Committee 101 would like to acknowledge and thank Professor Victor Rinaldi and his local organising team for their hard work, commitment and dedication which resulted in such successful conference.
We would also like to thank all the participants (more than 150) and authors for their contributions (118 papers published in the proceedings plus 7 additional papers published in a special number of the Journal of Soils and Foundation) as well as the invited keynote speakers: Prof. L. Laloui, Prof. M. Coop, Prof. E. Alonso, Prof. R. Jardine, Prof. D.S. Kim, Prof. A. Viana da Fonseca. Professor Herve Di Benedetto delivered the prestigious Third Bishop Lecture, while Professor Fumio Tatsuoka presented the Plenary Lecture.
The 7th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials will be organised in Glasgow, UK in 2019.
