Earth Day was founded by Wisconsin's own Gaylord Nelson on this day in 1970. Since that day, hundreds of countries continue to take part in Earth Day events that demonstrate the care & protection of our natural environment. I was born on Earth Day, so it is a holiday that I have a certain affection for. I'm lucky enough that my work at Community GroundWorks has had me celebrating Earth Day all week long!
I spent Monday morning at Troy with our Land Director, Shelly Strom. As we were monitoring the land for future projects, we discovered spring ephemerals popping up in our woodland. We found Dutchman's Breeches, Virgina Springbeauties, and Bloodroots! It was such at treat to view these short-lived wonders! Come take a walk on the land and check them out for yourself!

Later in the week I got to help out with Field Trips at our Goodman Youth Farm. Participants harvested Jerusalem Artichokes and made 'Sunchoke Salad' in the outdoor kitchen. The kids planted kale & broccoli starts, and finished the day making garden art to celebrate our Earth.

Today, I "Speak for the Trees" ! We will be planting fruit trees at Spring Harbor Middle School in preparation for the grand opening of their greenhouse. This effort is on behalf of our Schoolyard Orchard Project which has helped to plant over 200 edible fruit & nut trees and perennial shrubs in the Madison area since its inception in 2014.
That's just a little taste of all of the fun things we are up to now that the season is in full swing!
Hoping you have a wonder-filled Earth Day,
Anna Varriano
