Literacy Night is TOMORROW, April 7 at 5:30

We are so excited for our annual event celebrating and exploring literacy! The focus for Literacy Night this year will be the election of a “UCCC Book of the Year.” Each classroom will nominate a book and will promote their book during the evening. Each child will then vote in the gallery for the book.  At a later date, the winner will be announced as will the other books as “Honorable Mentions.” Check out each classroom's candidate in the image below.

Literacy Night 2016 includes fun activities for the whole family, an opportunity to learn
ways to value and embed literacy in your home, and a chance to witness how UCCC brings literacy to life through our daily curriculum.

See you at the Center,
Ms. Peaches
Center Director
Our infant and toddler students have been celebrating literacy with curriculum focusing on books like "Five Little Monkeys" and "Hand, Hand, Fingers Thumb" through group readings and songs. Teachers have also asked their families what books they are reading and documented this to share with others, encouraging literacy at home and in the classroom. Students are creating a wide array of artwork that is helping develop fine and gross motor skills. In awe of the world of color, students are fascinated by the sensory and literary experiences.
Our preschool students have been exploring what an electoral process is like in preparation for Literacy Night. The classrooms have immersed themselves in the setting, characters and story lines of their books. They have been making campaign posters that share their passion for the book and interpretations of the book through art. These moments have focused on on all three spheres in the LUME Approach by expanding vocabulary, encouraging an awareness of the self and others, and strengthening resiliency.
  • A Shower for the NEW Infant/Toddler Rooms - Friday, April 15 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.: After months of construction and preparation, we are excited to debut two NEW Infant/Toddler Rooms at University City Children's Center. With funding from our partner, Youth In Need, the new rooms will address the increasing need for high quality infant and toddler care and education. The additional rooms will create 16 spots for children under the age of three to enroll and benefit from our creative curriculum and inside-out approach. Click here to RSVP and join us for a celebration of all the new babies joining UCCC's family! The baby shower will be a fun-filled time with refreshments, hors d'oeuvres, and activities.
  • Parent Hour with the Infant/Toddler Classrooms - Tuesday, April 19 from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m.: Join your fellow infant/toddler families for a parent play date. The play date will include: opportunities to meet and talk with other infant/toddler parents, a fun activity that you can take home and play with your child, and conversation about young children’s brain development. Let us know if you are able to join us for PARENT HOUR by adding your name to the sign-up sheet in the classroom. Click here for more info.
  • Welcome UCCC Families and Staff to the New Lactation Room: We are excited to announce that our new lactation space is open for our families and employees. The beautiful new space has two areas to support our breastfeeding mothers; a cozy chair space and a desk/station that can be used for pumping. This new space also has information and resources available to support breastfeeding families. A big thank you to Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) for providing funding to help support this space for us, and to Jessica Sims (Center Support Specialist) who has been working behind the scenes to make this room possible!

  • It is time to complete the final DECA of the school year: Resilience is built in children through protective factors that can be found in the environment (such as attending a high quality early education program), in the family, and inside the child. We use a tool at UCCC called the DECA (Devereux Early Childhood Assessment) to understand protective factors that each child has within them. Click here to read more and if you have questions about the DECA, talk to your child’s teachers, Ms. Peaches, Ms. Faosat, or Ms. Jessica.
  • Summer Camp 2016 - June 13 to July 22: As the days get longer and the grass gets greener, the energy builds for the joyful days of summer at UCCC. In the months before summer camp, our educators begin the planning process and gather ideas for engaging and inspiring our children. For 2016 we are celebrating differences and strengthening our understanding of equity, fairness, and acceptance through empathy and compassion. Click here to learn more and check out the weekly themes.
  • Attention Design-Expert Parents: We are looking to assemble a committee of parents to design this year's summer camp t-shirts. We had tie-dye shirts in the past, but this year we want to go all out and make a commemorative t-shirt that the kids and teachers will wear all summer and get to keep at the end. If you are skilled in design and would like to contribute to this project, please email Hitomi (hinoue@uccc.org) with your contact information or talk to any summer camp committee member in person (Hitomi, Teri, or Kara) to get on the committee!
Nurturing Connections is a series of classes for parents and their infant/toddlers focused on helping children to develop self-confidence, deepen their understanding of self and others, and increase their ability to think and explore the world around them. The tone of the class is relaxed, playful, and supportive. Attend one of the orientation session held monthly at Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation and sign up for a class this spring or summer! The next Nurturing Connections Orientation is on Wednesday, April 13. Click here to learn more.

Classes are facilitated by LUME Institute's Shannon Carr, M.A.T., a student of the RIE® Practicum Pathway under the mentorship of RIE® Associate Polly Elam.
