April Opens With Successful Religious School Activities!
A message from Malka Sansani, Director of Education and Youth

CBH's first-ever Religious School Open House took place last Sunday, resulting in nine families interested to enroll their children this Fall.  Many thanks to Laurie Stillman for her assistance with creating a productive event.

The 3rd and 4th grade Shabbaton last weekend was well-attended.  The students are happy to have more of these events to look forward to as they continue their Jewish education at CBH!

As part of a pilot program, our 7th graders and their families have put the money that they would have spent on B'nei Mitzvah gifts to one another into a tzedakah fund.  They have made a group decision to review proposals from non-profits aimed at addressing hunger, and then award their tzedakah fund to the organizations that they feel are most deserving.  In order to increase the impact of their efforts, the students held bake sales last weekend, both at CBH and elsewhere in Davis, to raise additional funds.  Hungry to help?  You can sweeten their mitzvah by supporting their bake sales this weekend.  One is planned at Nugget Fields THIS SATURDAY, 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (weather permitting), and the location for THIS SUNDAY will be announced at Sunday School services.

Announcing "PJ Our Way"
Jewish books for children ages 9-11 years

This program extends the "PJ Library" concept to older children, giving these young readers more autonomy to choose the books that they want to receive and even to post their own book reviews!  The Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region is one of 24 communities selected for a national pilot program this year.  To learn more and sign-up, please click this link.
Gan Haverim Preschool News
by Rhoda Rohnstock, Director

The Gan Haverim children enjoyed celebrating Purim last month.  Following a Music Together lesson, the children had a costume parade around the CBH campus.  After making LOTS of noise to scare off Haman, the children noshed on hamantaschen that they had made themselves.

Now we are getting ready for Passover with a lot of cleaning, sweeping and scrubbing. It’s amazing how much the children want to help with the work necessary to make our classroom sparkly clean.  As the month progresses, the children will learn about Baby Moses, and will take turns putting Moses into the "River Nile," which will be made in our sandbox. The older children also will make Elijah cups, and will create Matzah houses for snack one day. Children of all ages will make their own seder plates to take home and share with their families.  The Passover studies will culminate in a model Seder in each classroom on Wednesday, April 27.

To learn more about Gan Haverim and enrollment options, please contact
ganhaverim@yahoo.com, or 530-758-0842, ext. 105.
THIS SATURDAY, April 9

THIS TUESDAY, April 12

A Taste of Yiddish Study Group
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., CBH Library

Do you have childhood memories of hearing Yiddish?  Are you curious about Yiddish in Jewish culture?  This group of approximately 10 welcomes new members, and functions in a "book group" format, sharing copies of stories, songs and jokes in Yiddish, that are then translated and discussed in English.

It is ideal for participants to know the Hebrew alefbet before attending, however help is available for those needing assistance.  This is NOT a drop-in group; regular attendance on the second and fourth weeks of the month is necessary in order to build skills from one meeting to the next.  Please contact Zipi Mor at 530-792-8917 if you plan to join the group, or if you need additional details.

Matzo, Macaroons and More Available at Local Grocery Stores

Friday, April 22 is the first seder, but your CBH leadership has been at work for months to ensure that Passover provisions are available for partners to purchase at their favorite Yolo County supermarkets!

An ad hoc committee formed and, in addition to Nugget and Whole Foods, the group received commitments from Save Mart, Safeway and the Davis Food Co-Op that shelves will be stocked with kosher for Passover items by Sunday, April 10.  Please support these local stores, so that they will continue to support our holiday needs!

If you still find that you are having difficulty locating what you need at these stores, please let
Ann Teal, Carole Plack, Janet Meizel, or Pat Philipps know by clicking their names, so that these items can be added to the "wish list" to be shared with the stores in the future.
