Welcome to the first newsletter of the LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA project!

The ADAPT2CLIMA eNewsletter will inform you about the progress, the results and the events of the LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA project.
The aim is to keep
all relevant actors in the field of climate change adaptation and agriculture up to date.

ADAPT2CLIMA

Adaptation to Climate change Impacts on the Mediterranean islands' Agriculture

The LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA project aims at increasing the knowledge on the vulnerability of EU Mediterranean agriculture to climate change and at developing and to support decision making for adaptation planning. To this aim a set of climate, hydrological and crop simulation models for the assessment of climate change impacts on agriculture will be deployed. Moreover, a decision support tool for the elaboration of adaptation strategies for the agricultural sector will be also developed.

Three amongst the largest  islands in the Mediterranean basin (Crete - Greece, Sicily - Italy) and Cyprus) will be the pilot areas of the project.

The project initiated in October 2015 and has a duration of 43 months. The National Observatory of Athens is the coordinator of the project while the project partners are the Agricultural Research Institute of Cyprus, the Institute of Biometeorology of the National Research Council of Italy, the National Technical University of Athens, the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Mediterranean Fisheries of the Region of Sicily (Italy) and the Region of Crete (Greece).

The project is co-financed by the LIFE programme for the Environment and Climate Action (2014-2020). read more

«Increase knowledge on the vulnerability of EU Mediterranean agriculture to climate change and to support decision making for adaptation planning»

MAIN EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Estimates of future climate changes for the 3 Mediterranean islands
  • Vulnerability assessment for the pilot rural areas to climate change
  • Development of a decision support tool (ADAPT2CLIMA tool) for enabling well-informed decision-making for adaptation planning in agriculture
  • Climate change adaptation strategies for the studied areas
  • Awareness raising of stakeholders and target groups on issues related to agriculture and climate change
These outcomes will be achieved by the methodology explained in the following diagram:

ACTIONS

  • C1 Knowledge capitalization in the three project areas
  • C2 Review and assessment of the national and European policy framework on agriculture and evaluation of the available adaptation options
  • C3 Use of regional climate models for the projection of future climate conditions
  • C4 Assessment of the vulnerability of agriculture to climate change
  • C5 Development of the ADAPT2CLIMA tool to support adaptation planning for agriculture
  • C6 Implementation, optimization and demonstration of the ADAPT2CLIMA tool
  • C7 Development of an adaptation strategy of agriculture to climate change impacts
EVENTS

ADATP2CLIMA is organising several events during the project lifespan, including meetings, workshops, seminars and demonstrations. Read more
Up to now a kick-off meeting and the launching events for the three islands (Cyprus, Sicily and Crete) have already been done.

The ADAPT2CLIMA kick-off meeting
Athens, 26th October 2015
The kick-off meeting of the ADAPT2CLIMA project was held on the 26th of October a
t the central premises of NOA at Lofos Nymfon, Thissio, Athens. Representatives from all the associated beneficiaries (ARI, CRETE, CNR-IBIMET, NTUA and SICILY) participated at the meeting. Read more

LAUNCHING EVENTS
CYPRUS, Nicosia, 4th December 2015
The first Launching event of the LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA program was held on the 4th December 2015 at the Agricultural Research Institute of Cyprus based in Nicosia.
During the event, project’s description, its purposes and scientific issues (such as the climate change in Cyprus, the impacts of climate change in agriculture and strategies for adaptation in the agriculture sector) were presented.
In addition, the Steering Committee - which will be in charge of providing technical information and support the project from its start to its completion - was formed in this launching event. Read more

SICILY, Petrosino, 13th December 2015
The second launching event was successful in terms of participation: more than 200 farmers, members of agricultural cooperatives and associations, scientists, regional and local authority officials, attended in order to share their knowledge and exchange their experiences and views on the crucial issues of climate change impacts to agriculture and the adaptation of agriculture to climate change.
During the meeting a short overview of the project was given, as well as its objectives and expected results. Moreover, the main steps of the methodology used, as well as some information for the ADAPT2CLIMA decision support tool that will be developed were presented.
Participants showed great interest and interacted with the speakers and the project partners in order to discuss and to deepen some aspects related to climate change, local and mediterranean agriculture, and the project itself.

The launching event was included in the framework of the presentation of the annual report of the Colomba Bianca winery, and this enhanced the participation and impact on the local media. Read more

CRETE, Heraklion, 23rd December 2015
The launching event attracted local stakeholders, among which local authorities and farmers.
After a brief introduction of the agricultural sector of Crete (which creates the 10% of local GDP), the importance of knowing the implications of climate change on agriculture, in terms of vulnerabilities and challenges was discussed, with particular regard to the local situation.
Afterwards, the project, its objectives, methodologies and main expected results, including the scientific decision support tool and feasible adaptation strategies were illustrated.
Participants actively discussed several aspects related to climate change, its impacts on local agriculture, climate models and to the project itself. Read more
