by Madison Brantley
Can Christians Have Fun?

Important Notices

Your Child's Safety is Important!

Heritage School has the safety of our students in mind as we post new signs on the playground.  We welcome student activity at Heritage School.  However, we ask that if your student would like to play on the playground after school hours, a parent or guardian must directly supervise their play.  Thank you for your cooperation!
Please note that Heritage School (Herzog Hall) closes daily at 4:00 p.m.  All students must be picked up by 4:00 p.m. unless they are participating in an athletic practice.   Thank you.
ATTENTION PARENTS:  PLEASE do not park in either of the circle drives in front of the school. These are fire lanes as well as drive through lanes and you are hindering the flow of traffic if you park your car there.  Please use the provided parking spaces if you need to park and come into the school.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Tutor Program:

Student Council is happy to announce that tutoring is now available for Upper School Students!  The tutoring program offers a unique opportunity for middle-schoolers to succeed academically with one-on-one help from an experienced Rhetoric school student, and helps strengthen the bond between the members of our Heritage Family.  There are currently 12 tutor-tutee pairs, and sessions usually occur during study halls after lunch (Other times can be arranged depending on the volunteer’s schedule).  Special thanks to all the students who have volunteered to make this possible!  If you are interested in getting a tutor, or if you have any questions, contact Sean O’Leary at soleary97@gmail.com for more information.

Heritage Business Association

This week at the Heritage Business Association, we were honored to hear from  Andy McDonald, physical therapist and owner of SMPT.  Mr. McDonald opened his Fredericksburg clinic in 1996 and has since developed satellite clinics in Marble Falls, Llano, Blanco, and Kerrville.  This was the first week we were visited by a business founder, having previously enjoyed the extensive knowledge of the mayor of Fredericksburg and the vice president of Frost National Bank.  We were grateful to hear from Mr. McDonald, who--like those before him--offered us a description of his duties as a business owner and physical therapist in addition to his own “Recipe for Success.”
According to Mr. McDonald, the most important idea to ensure a lasting business or team is to have a team atmosphere.  Delegate work based on the strengths of your team members, he said, and build off of those who have proven themselves.  In addition, he stressed the importance of having goals--something to keep you going when there’s an easy lull. He did, however, warn us that although evolving with the times is important, it is still important to stay true to your roots and not overextend yourself in your efforts.
At the end of the meeting, we discussed what factors make a business successful in a community and gave an example of a business we thought would thrive in Fredericksburg and an explanation of our decisions.  All in all, the third meeting of the Heritage Business Association went very well and we are excited to see who we’ll learn from next!

WYNNE-SMITH makes Heritage History

Senior, Jack Wynne-Smith is the first Heritage School student to be awarded the lucrative Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance scholarship. This scholarship opportunity targets Gillespie County high school students planning to major in any of the fine arts: drama, music, painting, sculpture, or in Jack’s case film. Besides an application detailing their resume activities, transcript and an essay describing their personal aesthetic vision for a career in their chosen medium, candidates must supply the PCAA committee with a portfolio or audition. The process is quite competitive and for good reason. This scholarship follows a student through four years of college paying $1500 per semester for four semesters and then $2500 for the last four semesters. Well done, Jack!

Madeleine Londa Wins Opportunity at Samford

Junior, Madeleine Londa, was honored with ardent compliments on her application essays and a first-wave acceptance to Samford University’s selective Micha 6:8 Summer Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. Micah Summer Fellows will create a foundation for service by first studying classical, Christian, and contemporary ideas of justice, mercy, and humility, the virtues of Micah 6:8. These principles will be grounded by interaction with seasoned civil rights experts at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Students will then have the opportunity to live out their new understanding of justice, mercy, and humility through two days of service in high-need communities of Birmingham. We look forward to Madeleine’s rousing account next fall.

Early College Credit Registration Open for Spring

Central Texas College has opened its registration portal for Summer Classes. You should start the online application process at:   http://www.ctcd.edu/students/prospective-students/how-to-enroll/texas-students/   Complete the one-time online application to CTC, track down your SAT scores and make an appointment with Kristy Kothe at the Hill Country University Center (254-616-3401) You must be a junior or senior to register and are limited to two courses per semester.
More independent souls may find the ONLINE early college offerings at LeTourneau University more suitable: http://www.letu.edu/_Admissions/dualcredit/  Although LETU online students do not have designated online class times, they do have weekly deadlines for graded work. LETU courses cost about $360 each.
Early college credit not only saves thousands of tuition dollars ($328/course at CTC  compared to $950 at A&M and $3636 at Baylor), the gift of time and flexibility in your future college schedule can be more advantageous in pursuing a minor or double major. Also, the seniority attained by early college credit can make a huge difference at freshman registration. Of course, early college credits afford little advantage at all if your chosen major degree plan does not call for those courses or your target college does not accept the transfer. Mrs. Sauer can help you find that information and help you make a plan.
