After a long vacation, it took a little time to get back into the swing of school. We started off by reviewing our routines and then quickly starting off our week with the letter W. To learn the letter, we made paper plate wales, discussed how to wait patiently, made worms, explored the different states of water (solid and liquid), and put together wacky spider webs. We also had waddle races and tossed beanbags into wastebasket. It was a fun week and a great way to end the third quarter!
We had a great week after a wonderful break! Our five cocoons hatched into beautiful butterflies while we were on Easter break---how fitting! This week we worked with the letter Gg as in goat and we started a new unit in math! Our third quarter ended Friday--hard to believe we are almost first graders.
This week we continued to work in making inferences in reading class. We also worked with verbs in the present-tense and the past-tense, identifying the base word and the ending. In math were are now working on telling time to the hour and half-hour. In science, we are just beginning our Chapter on Weather and Seasons. In social studies we are learning more about being responsible citizens.
We having been reading about ancient animals and the fossils that were discovered to help scientists be able to study and give us information about them. In Super Croc we read about an ancient crocodile that lived 110 million years ago that was as long as a school bus and weighed 17,500 pounds. It was related to crocodiles that live today.
The third graders enjoyed their long break but we got right back into the swing of things on Tuesday. In math we are continuing to work with multiplication and division. This week, our math lessons focused on multi step and complex word problems that we did an amazing job solving and followed the order of operations. In reading Mrs. Hentges' group started working on their final copies of their animal essays. In science we started to learn about different forms of energy. In social we are talking about different cultures.
This week in 4th grade we have started studying greek and latin root words. We are creating journals to help us remember these! In math class we are multiplying by 10's, 100's, 1,000's. We are also discussing properties and algebraic notation. In social studies we are learning about early American explorers. We also are recommend you all listen to our new favorite song we listen to in religion class- "Everything is Holy Now" by Minnesota artist Peter Maye
This week in reading we practiced writing summaries. The students read "Davy Crockett Saves the World" and wrote a summary of the plot of the story. They also wrote summaries on their speech contest book. We will continue to go more in depth with summarizing. In math, the fifth graders worked on functions and equations. The fifth and sixth graders have been busy getting ready for our speech contest. I cannot wait to hear the students act out their children's book! We will have the classroom competitions next week, and then the school wide competition to follow. This is one of my favorite events of the year!
It's been a fun week in 6th grade! We started talking about Earth Science... earthquakes, volcanoes, and something called Pangaea. We're talking about Customary & Metric measurement in math, writing an essay about the Euro in reading, and we FINALLY get to make tessellations in math class. Mr P promised us a long time ago that we'd get to make them before the end of the school year, and now we are. But the best part is that we found out about a project we'll be working on for fourth quarter: we get to build our own volcano (using baking soda & vinegar)!
