Student News @GT-AE

One of the competitors in the AE 1601 competitionThe month of March started off with another GT-AE rite of spring: the annual AE 1601 Design Competition, held in the GT Student Recreation Center. Students from two sections of the Intro AE course, taught by Prof. Karen Feigh,  put their fledgling knowledge of aircraft design on display...see the results.   Aviation Week magazine named GT-AE doctoral student (now ASDL research engineer) Imon Chakraborty to its annual 20/Twenties List. The list recognizes  up-and-coming leaders in the Henderson Johnsonfield...read more....The National Science Foundation selected 25 of the best aerospace engineering graduate students in the country for its prestigious 2016 Connie LiuResearch Grants. Three of those students are from GT-AE: Henderson Johnson, (a student of Prof. Tim Lieuwen)Connie Liu (a student of Prof. Mitchell Walker) and Shane Shane LympanyLympany (a student of Prof. Krishan Ahuja).  All three of these exceptional researchers will be fully supported in their graduate work for three years....read more

Dr. Robert BraunThe scholarship of GT-AE professor Robert Braun was recognized this month by the Journal of Spacecraft & Rockets. An article he co-authored, "Mars Exploration Entry, Descent and Landing Challenges" was the single-most cited article between 2005 and 2010. read more
And it was a busy month for Dr. Dewey Hodges, whose scholarship was recognized in two venues. First, there was the publication of the seminal textbook Dynamics: Theory and Application of Kane’s Method which he co-authored with Carlos M. Roithmayr. And then, mid-month, Hodges gave a keynote address, "Unified Approach Dr. Dewey Hodgesfor Accurate and Efficient Modeling of Beams and Plates Made of Thick Composite Laminates" at the AHS-sponsored International Workshop on Mechanical Behavior of Thick Composites.

AHS to recognize Dr. Robert Loewy

Dr. Robert LoewyIf you are heading to the American Helicopter Society's Forum 72 Symposium in May, you are bound to 'bump into' an old friend - former GT-AE Chair Robert Loewy. In honor of his 90th birthday, the organization has named its Technical Session on Dynamics after Loewy, a much revered thought leader in the field. Look for his name on the Technical Sessions agenda for Tuesday, May 17. Find out more about Forum 72.
From the GT-AE
Chair
Dr. Vigor Yang

GT-AE has always had its own version of 'March Madness' - a season full of hard work, sweat, and teamwork.

But instead of rebounds and buzzer-beaters, GT-AE obsesses about myriad technical and research competitions - events that showcase what happens when you combine rich talent with motivation, guidance, and resources.

Talent always rules.

We are seeing that play out now. It is reflected in this month's SAE competition, and in our exceptional representation among the schools that produced 2016 NSF research grantees. Smart students, working under the guidance of dedicated faculty have boundless futures.

And we saw the results a few weeks ago, when the US News & World Report ranked our graduate program #2 among the more than 60 aerospace engineering schools in the nation - a moniker that our undergraduate program earned last year.

By themselves, these external accolades cannot make a difference in our School's legacy. The field of aerospace engineering is too competitive; the subject matter, too complex. But, as we push ourselves to tackle that 'next impossible problem,' it is good to know that we're well-fortified with strong minds.

That talent- and our tireless ambition to succeed - is why 'March Madness' is more triumph than tumult here at GT-AE.
