Discover Dogs at Crufts 2016

Dachshunds in demand!

A huge “THANK YOU” to the Midland Dachshund Club and all their helpers for making the Dachshund booths at Discover Dogs such a success once again. Visitors probably don’t realise the huge amount of work that goes into organising this event. Well done Ian Smith and your team of helpers.

If you were watching Crufts on More4 did you see Mini Wire owner Mandy Dance who was interviewed on the Friday show? Mandy was asked about health issues in the breed and commented on the importance of the "Give a Dog a Genome" project which the Breed Council is supporting.

Dachshund Respite Care

A new service in Scotland

Dachshund Respite Care offers a bespoke service to owners of Dachshunds with elderly, sick and Dachshunds recovering from surgery.

Whether you require care for a day, overnight, weekend or longer, Elaine Brechin provides everything in her home to look after your Dachshund, from those that require a little TLC to those that require more nursing care.

Having retired from the Ambulance Service after 38 years, Elaine has the necessary skills to look after any medical needs, administer medication, injections, dressings, bladder expression and other medical procedures as required. A Vet that operates 24 hours a day is less than 5 minutes away to call upon, in case of emergencies.

It can be very difficult to care for elderly and sick Dachshunds and Elaine offers owners time to recharge their batteries and get a much needed break. For those dogs recovering from operations, in particular Dachshunds having undergone spinal surgery, it can be a difficult time for owners and they can easily feel unable to cope with the initial care required and/or take time off of work.

Working closely with Fusion Vet Physio, which opens in April and has a hydrotherapy pool, offers Physiotherapy and rehabilitation, these services will also be available, with the consent of the owner’s Vet.

  • Round the clock care, or boarding for a few days
  • Care for elderly, sick and post-operative Dachshunds
  • Daily massages, grooming and nail care
  • Pick-up service from vets and veterinary hospitals in Scotland
  • Liaise with your vet to ensure continuation of any treatment

KC Academy launch

A new online learning resource for breeders, exhibitors and judges

The Kennel Club has launched its new online learning resource, the Kennel Club Academy; home to accessible education to support those involved in the world of dogs.

Led by the Kennel Club's Training Board, the Academy is an online learning resource for breeders, judges and KCAI scheme members. It aims to provide consistent and high quality standards of education and training in every area of Kennel Club activity.

A range of learning resources, films and assessments are available through the Academy, sharing insight and guidance from professionals and experts in their fields. The Academy was showcased to the public on the Kennel Club stand at Crufts from 10th - 13th March.

Everyone interested in expanding their knowledge will be able to learn at their own pace, as all the Academy resources are available 24/7 and can be accessed as many times as the user wishes.

The information provided in the Judges' Education area aims to encourage aspiring and established judges to attend seminars and assessments delivered by Kennel Club Accredited Trainers. These seminars explain the importance of the role of the dog show judge and provide information on Kennel Club regulations and judging procedures, making it easier for new and current judges to keep up to date.

The breed specific films featured on the Academy website are a learning resource for judges and others with an interest in the featured breeds. Dachshunds are among the first breed films available.

The breeder information is free of charge, whilst the cost for judges' education is £26 a year, with access to all courses.

The Academy Shop is where you'll find information on what's available. Once you set up your subscription and have received your login, you can start to browse the wealth of information available.

New online Epilepsy Database

Report any cases of epilepsy in your Dachshunds

At the November 2015 Breed Council meeting it was agreed that we should establish an open, online registry of Dachshunds with epilepsy so that pedigree information would be available in the public domain. We know we have a problem with epilepsy in Mini Long Dachshunds compared with the other varieties (4% prevalence from all our surveys and 4 x higher than the other varieties). Unless we can gather and analyse data on affected dogs, we will not be able to make progress with eradicating the problem.

We are grateful to Dr. Clare Rusbridge and Dr. Holger Volk for their help with the design of a survey of epilepsy which will help us
with our research into this condition. This is stage 1 of the project. Stage 2 will be when we publish the details of affected dogs.

You can use this form to submit a report on epilepsy diagnosed by a Veterinary Surgeon if you are a UK Dachshund breeder or owner. Please do not use the form to report Lafora Disease as there is already a separate survey of dogs with Lafora.

Your personal details will not be shared publicly. Details of your dog and its diagnosis will be shared in an online, open registry of Dachshunds diagnosed with epilepsy.
