REMINISCING ABOUT MY FIRST INSTRUCTIONAL DVD:
I LOVE Turkish Belly Dance
It was back when producing dvds technologies were just becoming affordable. Very few dance instructors had one out, World Dance New York started started producing a product line of Belly Dance DVDs. Its is not like today where everyone with a smart phone and a garage has an instructional dvd out there. When I agreed to do this I told my mentor. She sat me down and talk to me about the ramifications of putting yourself out there. She told me of a very painful experience she had. I chalked her concerns up to, we as artists are already putting ourselves out there and I went ahead and my DVD launched. I have to tell you I was completely unprepared for the horrific public lashing I took from people who I once considered friends, troupe mates, coworkers and teachers. It was very much the "who is she to get to have a DVD when they themselves didn't have one". A community and people who I once saw only as a supportive family, suddenly was viscous. I cried not because I could have done things better, but because I took it as a betrayal. Luckily I had other supportive people that surrounded me. I learned lessons and I gained the courage to go on making 8 more instructional DVDs and contributed performances to 4 theatrical performance DVDs. Through this I have reached people around the world. Ill walk into some foreign country and a stranger will walk up to me and tell me I was there very first belly dance DVD and how much it inspired to continue learning more. I feel very blessed. None of that would have happened if I let those negative people crush me.
As the internet and social media outlets create an easy platform for us to "put ourselves out there" it comes with wonderful things and very painful things. It is important to learn how put it where it belongs in your mind.
I was watching this youtube blogger- because he has funny joke postings. I scrolled down to find this serious one. It is a little gem that talks about his point of view of how to deal with this very thing of putting it out there and how to manage it. He might not be your cup of tea, but know that there are other people out there who are dealing with the same issues. Seek good people to surround yourself with!
