Dear <<First Name*>>,

Verena KwanFirst of all, thank you for your support of AYC and our mission to empower low-income, immigrant, and at-risk youth and families of all communities!

Please allow me to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Verena Kwan, and I'm the new development staff at AYC. It has been my pleasure to meet some of you in person, and I look forward to meeting all of AYC's friends and supporters in the coming months.

I'm ecstatic to be a part of AYC's culture of growth and mission to support our community, one youth and one family at a time. The passion of AYC's staff is phenomenal, and it's what makes this organization a powerhouse for making positive change happen. There are many amazing things on the horizon for AYC...please watch this space!

This month, AYC has several exciting announcements and a few volunteer opportunities. Read on to find out more.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me by replying to this email or calling 626-309-0425 x112.

AYC Receives $10,000 Grant from Time Warner Cable to Strengthen Youth Skills in "STEM"

Time Warner Cable logoAYC received a $10,000 grant from Time Warner Cable (TWC) and the Connect a Million Minds® (CAMM) initiative to inspire students to develop their skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and enter STEM-related careers. This is the third consecutive year that AYC has received the grant.

As part of the grant, AYC will host a STEM Day on Friday, June 24, 2016 for students in grades 1 through 8. STEM Day gives students the opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments and engage them in active learning outside of the school setting. STEM Day is open to the public and has a materials fee of $20 for non-AYC participants. TWC employees will volunteer and work with the youth in various STEM-related team-building activities on STEM Day.

Connect a Million Minds logoIn addition, grant funding from TWC will allow AYC to purchase STEM curriculum for its summer and after-school educational programs. The grant is expected to serve over 200 youth in grades 1 through 8 from public schools across the San Gabriel Valley.

“AYC deeply appreciates the support of Time Warner Cable and Connect a Million Minds,” said Michelle Freridge, Executive Director of AYC. “Studies show that the demand for STEM jobs is increasing rapidly while the number of young people entering STEM careers remains flat. This grant helps expose more youth to STEM and pique their interest in STEM careers early on.”

"We want to thank TWC for granting us the opportunity to expose and challenge our students to engage in STEM activities,” expressed Nicholette Espinosa, Director of Educational Enrichment Services at AYC. “This opens the doors for them to challenge their minds and think outside the box. It also encourages the students to pursue higher education and even STEM careers outside the gender and minority norms."

The Accelerated Children's Education (ACE) program is seeking volunteers to teach any type of dance to our summer program kids! The time commitment is flexible, but expect to spend approximately 5 x 1-hour sessions during the week to teach the kids!
