World champion enjoys world class winery

The world’s best surfers are in the Margaret River Region for the third round of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) event, the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.

Reigning WSL world champion and 2015 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro winner Adriano de Souza decided to stay in Western Australia and holiday with his wife Patricia, even though he was eliminated from the contest last Sunday in Round 3.

“I’ve done some tours and visited wineries. I have my wife Patricia here and we have been enjoying the region, we’ve been everywhere,” de Souza said.

“We’ve been to Yallingup, Dunsborough, Cape Leeuwen Lighthouse and Vasse Virgin Olive Oil.

“We had a fantastic lunch at Leeuwen Estate, it was amazing,” de Souza said.

Leeuwen Estate Hospitality Manager Stepan Libricky said he gave de Souza a behind the scenes tour of the winery.

“Adriano had a go at plunging the grapes and churning the wine to help the fermentation process, which he seemed to enjoy,” Libricky said.

“He signed one of our operating vats, and we like to think that the world champion has signed a piece of equipment that’s going to produce world class wine.

“It was our pleasure to have him and his wife visit us for lunch, he’s a lovely and humble gentleman,” Libricky said.

Surfing WA CEO and Drug Aware Margaret River Pro Event Director Mark Lane said that Margaret River was the round where many of the surfers bring their families to join them on tour.

“What’s unique about the Pro is that away from the contest, there are so many quality surf breaks and a huge selection of tourism experiences on offer,” Mr Lane said.

“That’s why so many surfers bring their families with them – they go and enjoy surfing other waves along the coast, spend an afternoon together over a winery lunch on the lay days, check out the caves, bush walks in the forest, go hiking on the Cape to Cape track, go to Hamlin Bay to feed the sting rays, visit breweries and the like.”

The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro is one of 11 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) events in the world and will be held from April 8 to 19 at Surfers Point, Margaret River.

The WSL CT brings the top 34 ranked male (plus two wild card entries) and top 16 ranked female (plus one wild card entry) surfers to the extraordinary waves in the South West of Western Australia.
