Tanimura & Antle to receive Public-Private Partnership Award at MBEP Summit

The Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) will host its Second Annual Regional Economic Summit on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey. This all-day event will highlight exciting and innovative collaborative efforts that are transforming the Monterey Bay regional economy.

Public-Private Partnership Award – Tanimura and Antle, a Monterey County based industry leader in quality produce and the County of Monterey will be this year’s recipients of MBEP’s first Public Private Partnership Award for the innovative Spreckels Crossing farmworker housing project. Through a cooperative approach, Tanimura and Antle and the County of Monterey were able to build critically needed workforce housing.  Accepting the award will be Rick Antle, president and CEO of Tanimura and Antle and Simon Salinas, Monterey County Supervisor representing District 3. The Monterey County Business Council was a major supporter of the affordable housing project, with MCBC Executive Director Brian Turlington speaking out in favor of the project  before the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors last year and penning a thoughtful commentary in its favor in the Monterey Herald.

ES16 Marketplace – A showcase of nonprofit organizations making a positive impact in our region’s economy. Before and after the event and during each session break, we will open up the ES16 Marketplace to guests, highlighting the following exciting projects:

How does California rank among states in energy consumption?

California is highly efficient when it comes to energy use, with low per capita energy consumption compared to other states, according to a new report by Next 10. California also leads the nation in renewable energy production, and comes in second place when large hydropower is included, according to "California Energy: Comparing Production, Consumption & Spending in all 50 States."
In 2013, California ranked:

  • 1st in total solar projects at nearly 490,000, with the most megawatts installed at 3,868 MW
  • 4th lowest in per-capita energy consumption
  • 4th lowest in per-capita energy expenditures
  • 2nd in total energy consumption and expenditures (after Texas)

Take the California Budget Challenge

How would you balance California's budget? Next 10 has just released its 2016-2017 California Budget Challenge, which lets you decide what budget choices will keep California moving in a positive direction. Should we set aside funding for transportation? What should California do to plan for long-term pension and retiree health care costs?  What can the state do to make revenues more stable? Should tuitions increase at the UC and CSU? Decide at budgetchallenge.org.
Next 10 created the California Budget Challenge in 2005 to educate citizens about the state budget and the tradeoffs that are made to balance the budget.

Marina restaurant/retail complex breaks ground
Construction has started on the much-anticipated restaurant and retail space at the Dunes on Monterey Bay shopping center in Marina, confirms Scott Negri, SKN Properties co-owner and developer, whose project was given the green light by Marina officials and the Fort Ord Reuse Authority in February.
The project comprises 40,300 square feet of new building space on four development pads on a 3.7-acre parcel at Second Avenue and General Stilwell Drive. Plans are for the first three buildings to be delivered to tenants in September so as to open in time for the 2016 winter holiday season. The last building to be constructed will be two stories.
Expect Blaze Pizzeria, Teriyaki Madness, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Deli Delicious, Smash Burger, Starbucks, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Verizon, Sports Clips Haircuts and Sleep Train stores to be open by the end of the year. Read more

Join MCBC in celebrating Small Businesses

The Monterey County Business Council will host "Celebration of Small Businesses in Monterey County" on Friday, May 6.

We will be honoring outstanding small businesses in Monterey County during National Small Business Week (May 1-7) with an award presentation with U.S. Congressman Sam Farr and panels of local lenders who will discuss ongoing loan and financing programs. A wine and appetizer reception will follow.

National Small Business Week is a time to recognize the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. These entrepreneurs and small business owners are working hard to grow small businesses, create 21st-century jobs, drive innovation and increase our global competitiveness.

These small business owners are the backbone of our economy and we invite you to help us honor their determination and entrepreneurial spirit!

Our "Celebration of Small Businesses in Monterey County" will take place from 3-5:30 p.m., Friday, May 6 at Embassy Suites by Hilton Monterey Bay, Seaside. Register here.  For sponsorship information, please contact MCBC Executive Director Brian Turlington.
