March: Journey to the "West"
A total of 4 schools have been revisited all over Sichuan Province. It was the opportunity for our technical manager PingPing to track the progress of the newly opened classrooms as well as the ones that have been running for several years already.
The Xincitang school case:
Xincitang school is a very small institution situated deep in the Nanchong countryside. Even though they only have about 60 students and 2 teachers, the school plans to continue as normal until Mr. Chen retires. It is a real chance for the students to have a school close to their home to enjoy a better family life. Thanks to PWC, the facilities at the school have greatly improved following the installation of 20 refurbished computers. Given that the only two teachers at the school who are in charge of Chinese and Math class are unable to teach IT , the responsibility of teaching the IT class has fallen on the shoulders of the volunteers from different universities in Nanchong. These volunteers come to the school every weekend and give lessons ranging from arts to music. Thanks to the Green IT classroom and volunteers, the students at the school now have the opportunity to learn how to operate computers and have classes based around watching videos and using other multimedia materials. In the meantime, the Netspring staff also had an opportunity to attend a class with the children, which made for an unforgettable memory!
The four year old always ensures dust-proof covers are placed on the computers after using them. She told us that she learnt it from a volunteer and is determined to keep the computers away from dust to protect them.
The Donghua Yucai school case:
This migrant school supported by Faurecia, is located in the suburb of Chengdu Province and welcomes migrant students from grades 1 to 9. The Chengdu Education Department now includes IT as a subject into the list of APT (academic proficiency test), which means students need to pass all these exam subjects in order to graduate. In addition, the existing computers at the school before the installation of the Green IT classroom were not usable due to their age and condition. Most of students had no access to a proper IT education except for the children whose families can afford computers. Thus, the establishment of a Green IT classroom makes it possible for children to pass the IT exam, and furthermore, to get a good IT education. With a keen interest in computers and proficient computers skills, Mr.Duan, is a music teacher, and is also in charge of the computers class. In order to better support the teacher in its mission and make it easier for them to focus on main topics, Netspring is developing IT courseware specially designed to be used at the schools.
Yangrui and Shi Wenjing, two tiny typing experts! Yang said she wanted to learn how to make PPT slides, so that she could use them to record all the sweet memories from the Chinese festivals.
