Howdy <<First Name>>!

I'm finally getting around to doing my newsletter--
once again the months have flown by.

Things have not been easy-- mostly because of the nerve-issues in my hands and my ear problems, but I am continuing to focus on adapting, staying healthy and figuring out how to keep moving forward.

A lot of creative collaborations and performances are coming up-- very soon!

I'm trying to make my newsletters a little more varied and interesting and fun-- so, please, click around! :)

Thank you for your support and interest!!!  You help keep me going... Hope to hear from you and see you soon.
Cheers!  -
Joel
I will be performing the score I wrote for the short-film 'Devil's Work' - Live along with the film!  It'll actually be the Chicago premiere and will be along side two really interesting documentaries.  (This Saturday, April 16 at CIMMfest.)

I will be playing piano and ambient-electric guitar and will be joined by a cellist.  (Have yet to meet him-- rehearsing Friday!)

I am also excited to be performing with Ava Cherry-- David Bowie's former backup singer and girlfriend.  I will be playing drums and percussion with her at the festival on Sunday at 7pm for the closing night performances.  There are some other things in the works with her as well-- so stayed tuned.  She's an absolutely incredible singer.

(Earlier on Sunday, 2pm, I will also be playing percussion for a live, interactive video game and music experience.)

Hope you can make it!

(For those of you who can't, I will try and have some video footage in my next newsletter.)

Devil's Work - Political thriller  (trailer)
Directed by Miguel Silveira / Music by Joel Styzens
Last month I was inviting to see a David Bowie Tribute show at the Metro in Chicago.  Ava Cherry was the special guest and sang a handful of songs with the band-- Sons of the Silent Age.  In short-- a friend invited me backstage and I got to meet Ava and we all ended up talking about collaborating together... there's a potentially new film project as well some other things in the works.

That's all I can say right now--  will keep you updated!

(Interesting article on Ava)
"Devil's Work" political-thriller - now a featured selection of the GI Film Festival in Washington D.C. and the Uranium Festival in Brazil:
I am honored that the most recent film I composed the music for (Devil's Work) has been selected to be at the GI Film Festival supported by Michelle Obama.  It has also been selected for the Uranium Film Festival in Brazil which is film festival #10 for "Devil's Work!"
INSPIRING...

A few months ago we checked out a really interesting architecture exhibit at the MCA in Chicago.  David Adjaye is a British architect and designer born in Tanzania in East Africa.  I recommend checking out his design work: http://www.adjaye.com
Here is a very inspiring animation short my wife showed me a while back.  It's from a Chilean director and is the first Oscar win for Chile.  I was trying to find the entire video to show you, but now I can only find the trailer.
Here's an article and the trailer.  Hopefully you'll run across the full animation or it'll be available to rent and stream online soon:
FUN! :)

A few months ago I got to go with a buddy of mine to a special screening of the classic Marx Brothers comedy, "A Night at the Opera"-- one of my favorites!  (Click here for a clip)

I grew up watching the Marx Brothers as a child... takes me back and makes me feel all cozy and jolly-- and life feels a little simpler for about 80 minutes. ;)
In case you missed it...
In my last newsletter, I mentioned about my gig from Chicago to New Orleans through the Old Town School of Folk Music where I teach.

A gig ON a train... I called it an "80 MPH gig!"  It was miiiiiighty tricky playing the hammered dulcimer on that bumpy ride, but somehow I managed.

Here's a video clip:

Otoharmonics update:

I just can't seem to get into the routine of using this at night.  The in-ear monitors are really irritating my ears.  I am determined to give it another go, though-- and spend some more time with this device.  Will keep you updated.
