Deadspin rumored this last week & now we have an extended deal between the NCAA, CBS & Turner for March Madness rights that stretches until 2032. Overall we're talking $19.6b over 21 years or an average of $933m annually. CBS Sports chairman McManus, "The deal we have now and the way it has worked for the first six years has exceeded our expectation. Any metric you look at, we have exceeded in the first six years." Turner Prez Levy, "There are very few premium properties in the sports marketplace that can produce that kind of value that the NCAA tournament delivers." Possibly the most interesting piece of the puzzle is rights for any & all distribution platforms, even those that have yet to be created. No change to alternating the home of the National Championship game every year, though McManus says it "would serve all of us well...to release the brackets in a little more timely manner." More. - link, link, link
Latest from The Chronicle of Higher Education's Wolverton, "Coaches Support Athletes' Desire for More Time Away From Sports." More rest following road trips, study aboard opportunities & two weeks off after a playing seasons ends all endorsed by coaches in most sports, though a bit less so in FB & MBB. Northwestern AD & DI Council Chair Phillips on changes, "It’s certainly more complicated because everyone’s school year runs differently. But it’s something we can figure out...what should time demands in the summer look like? Would we be better served by having students do other things?" - link
Staying on topic, Pac-12 Commish Scott got face-to-face with Arizona State student-athletes yesterday on time demands, "I don’t think anyone wants to deprive student-athletes the opportunity to put in the time that they want in their sport. But what you don’t want is them feeling like they’re being forced to put in more than they really have to put in under pressure from a coach when they would rather be spending that time on their academics or social life. There is a lot of nuance involved in that." Also touched on the strong leadership of ASU AD Anderson, distribution challenges & opportunities for Pac-12 Networks ("It’s a process and a very dynamic time in the media business, not just for us.") & more. - link
Michigan FB HC Harbaugh sounds-off on the decision to ban satellite FB camps, "The incompetence of the NCAA has reared its ugly head yet again...During the NCAA basketball tournament we discuss the term 'student-athlete' ad nauseam in promoting our governing institution and our member institutions. Then, when we have an opportunity to truly promote the 'student-athlete' with a concept shared by educators and football men from all backgrounds, our leadership goes into hiding. I suggest we drop the term 'student-athlete' for consistency." Specifically mentions the SEC, ACC & Ole Miss HC Freeze in additional comments. - link
CBSSports.com's Solomon reviews monies spent with search firms during the latest FB HC carousel, UCF tops the list at $120k with Parker Executive Search, who also occupies the #2 spot with Iowa State's process at $97,553. Eastman & Beaudine in three of the top 6 slots ($80k for both South Carolina & Rutgers, $75k for Memphis). Virginia, Tulane, Miami, Toledo & North Texas did not return data on the request. Smallest amount on the list is $25k with College Sports Solutions for Louisiana Monroe's move. - link
Louisville MBB HC Pitino during a radio interview on Tuesday in regard to the NCAA investigation around his program, "It's almost pretty much over. I think everything's behind us right now. You're right, I can't say publicly whether I have or have not (spoken with the NCAA)." Also, "...the university has done everything that they can to justify the mistakes that were made, and then you move forward. And certainly we will. We'll have a great team coming back next year." - link
North Carolina Governor McCrory responded to strong push-back on his state's passing of a new law banning anti-discrimination protections for gay and transgender people. Expanded protections for state employees & wants legislation restored that would allow for the right to sue based on discrimination. No move on "common sense gender-specific restroom and locker facilities in government buildings and in our schools." - link
Milwaukee-based WTMJ says sources within the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee indicate Chancellor Mone stepped-in to veto the hire of Iowa State AC Otzelberger as the Panthers new MBB HC before the search ended with former Michigan AC Jordan. Per the article, at one point Otzelberger was told he would be the next HC by UWM brass before a u-turn occurred. - link
SB Nation's Swish Appeal reports a probe has been launched at Duke around possible mistreatment of WBB student-athletes. Statement from the university late yesterday afternoon, "The welfare and success of our student-athletes are among Duke's highest priorities. To that end, we are in the process of conducting an evaluation of the Duke women's basketball program. This effort is led by a Duke human resources professional outside the Athletics Department. Coach McCallie is aware of the evaluation and eager to assist." - link
Illinois settled on two fronts yesterday: $375k to be split among seven former WBB student-athletes based on claims that included discrimination & civil rights violations. Chancellor Wilson, "We’re sorry that these students’ experiences at Illinois did not meet our high expectations. This agreement reflects our genuine hope that they are able to progress to successful careers and lives." Former FB HC Beckman also gets $250k to avoid "protracted & costly litigation." - link

As the Summer Olympics in Brazil inch closer, so does the possible impeachment of Prez Rousseff. If a two-third of Brazil's House vote to remove Rousseff on Friday, the action will then move to the Senate where a simple majority will mean full impeachment hearings will begin. A number of other rules & stipulations around the process, but safe to say the political climate is quite tense. - link, link

North Dakota AD Faison announces his department will cut Baseball & Men's Golf as a result of state funding issues. The elimination of the two programs will save $720k. Interim Prez Schafer says the goal was to make "permanent reductions." Faison, "It’s very tough. I’ve never had to do it. It’s very hard. But we also understand the bigger picture. I can’t emphasize enough that we are a part of the university and we have a role to play along with everybody else." - link
Buffalo got a new set of marks & logos yesterday thanks to a university-wide branding initiative. First update to UB's Bull mark since 2006, plus modernized font for "Buffalo." New look unis coming in the near future. AD Greene, "...it is important that 'New York' is still a part of our identity and reflects our athletic and academic strength, which is shown through our new tagline, 'New York's Public Powerhouse.' Our research also showed us that 'Buffalo' has a very strong place in the hearts and spirit of the UB community." - link
Interesting read on the 'Red Wolves Leadership Academy' at Arkansas State that AD Mohajir says doesn't really exist at any other school in the nation. The Academy includes pairing student-athletes with mentors in their field of study, an opportunity to study abroad for credit hours (this year: London) & more. Around 60 Red Wolves are currently involved in the Academy, which has achieved a perfect job placement rate over the past two years for student-athletes who have participated. More. - link
UCLA continues to ring the fundraising bell & yesterday announced a $5m gift toward a new future home for Men's & Women's Soccer. Commitment comes from the Annenberg Foundation with the new stadium to bear its name. Capacity of new digs will be 3k with plenty of modern amenities, overall price tag around $10m with the balance coming from more privately raised dollars. - link
Compiled Twitter responses by former student-athletes around the nation on settlement checks they've received from the NCAA-EA Sports case. Maximum is $7,622, minimum is $58, with an average of $1,237. Also yesterday, former Northwestern FB student-athlete & change agent Colter on the checks, "I hope the college players receiving EA Sports checks now see the value they have. Video game $ is chump change compared to the TV revenue." - link, link
This research is from the retail industry in Britain, but it's pretty interesting to consider. Korn Ferry finds CEOs who were replaced from within outperformed those who were external hires. Percentage of females placed in the top leadership position decreased from 2014 to 2015. "Being forced into turnovers instead of planning them has recently cost each company...an average of $1.8B in foregone shareholder value. This is causing boards to pay more attention to effective succession management, giving rise to more internal "CEO-ready” candidates." - link

New Indiana State AD Clinkscales ready to get going in Terre Haute on May 2nd, "There's some things within our organization that I'm looking at making some adjustments in to make us more efficient. Has been in touch with Interim AD Lansing nearly every day, will also dive right into revenue generation. - link
Baylor WBB HC Mulkey believes Louisiana Tech AD McClelland did a thorough job vetting former WBB HC Summitt & will do the same with the Lady Techsters looming hire, "I know he’s hurt. But he has to pick himself up just like coaches have to do after tough losses and go back to work." More on Summitt, "I don’t know that anybody wasn’t convinced. Nobody had any bad stories to tell about Tyler. Nobody could foresee this coming." - link
Clemson FB HC Swinney got a new deal that will pay $4.55m this season & increase incrementally to $5.65m for the 2021 season. AD Radakovich, "We wanted to make sure we rewarded him and kept him in the elite level of college football head coaches in the country...Essentially, you’re looking at a market of very few individuals who are incredibly successful at their craft. We have one on our campus, and we want to make sure he stays here." If the Tigers were to remove Swinney, the buyout starts at $20m & decreases to $5m by 2021. If Swinney were to exit voluntarily he would owe $1m for each year remaining on the deal. More. - link
More news out of Clemson as some in student leadership push-back on a proposed $225 fee for reserved student FB tickets closer to the field. Assoc. AD for Communications Galbraith quick to note the move is only at the proposal stage & would not eliminate free tix for students. Student Body Prez Wilson, "We are concerned that this new policy will divide the Clemson Family between students who have the means to pay for season tickets and those who do not, and this has many negative implications." - link
