Capacity Development Programme on Integrated Urban Water Management in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Malaysian Capacity Development Network for Sustainable Water Management (MyCDNet) and the Academy of Science Malaysia (ASM) co-hosted a 1 Day Capacity Development Programme on Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM). This event was held on 3 March 2016 at the Function Hall, Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Menara MATRADE in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The capacity development programme was attended by approximately 40 persons from consultancies, NGOs, government bodies and institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.

Peri-urban Water Conflicts: Perspectives & Issues of Water Justice in South Asia, 23-25 May at Taj Vivanta, Hyderabad, India

The Peri-urban Water Conflicts workshop aims at building capacity for researchers and development practitioners, investigating issues of water justice in the context of peri-urban South Asia. The water justice issues include water rights, including right to water and equity, as key features of ongoing water governance requirements in the region. The workshop envisages to train more than 50 professionals, researchers and academic students from south Asia.

Regional training course on Earth Observation tools for wetlands ecosystems, 18-22 April, 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya

The objectives of the training course was for participants to gain a better understanding of the earth observation (EO) tools and concepts; be more familiar with using EO as tools for wetland ecosystem management; learn how to map and monitor the wetland ecosystem, and be familiar with open source EO tools such as QGIS/WOIS.

Regional Training in International Water Law (IWL) for Improved Transboundary Water Management

WaterNet will participate in the joint training on International Water Law (IWL) in Africa, being speared by the Global Water Partnership. The training will take place in Kampala, Uganda, 5-12 June 2016. It will be attended by 40 participants of which 5 will be funded by WaterNet. The aim of the training is to improve transboundary water management in Africa.

Master of Water Resources Management: Design of alternative pricing systems for collecting drinking water

Designing alternative pricing systems for collecting drinking water was the objective for the theses of graduates in Economics and Master in Economics and Business Eduardo Comellas, created at the initiative of Arg Cap-Net.

The working hypothesis emphasizes that, to help achieve the objectives of pricing policy, namely, fuel efficiency, equity payments, financial equilibrium of the provider and sustainability of the service, the design of a system of charging for the service drinking water, networks must not only take into account the costs of the provider entity, but also, and in a complementary way, should incorporate an adequate estimate of population demand for the service.

Africa-EU Innovation Alliance for Water and Climate, “AfriAlliance” H2020

WaterNet is part of a consortium of 16 organizations from Africa and Europe implementing the Africa-EU Innovation Alliance for Water and Climate, “AfriAlliance” Project, commonly referred to as the H2020 Project. The projects is being funded by the European Commission. The major objective of the project is for African and European stakeholders to work together in the areas of water innovation, research, policy, and capacity development in order to increase the preparedness of Africa for future Climate Change vulnerabilities.

SaciWATERs Launches Documentary Film “Necessity Triumphs”

SaciWATERs recently launched a documentary film the ‘Necessity Triumphs’ . The documentary is on how people in peri-urban areas near Hyderabad do not complain about the city waste water that comes to their villages. They instead use it for irrigating their paddy fields and vegetable farms. The documentary shows RO sludge water being used by residents of peri-urban areas to wash utensils and clothes.
