Artist Profile: Dave Woodgate
|
|
Our artist profile this month is on Dave Woodgate - and this is what Director of Development, Rob Davies had to say about Dave..."Dave Woodgate has worked in animation for 16 years. A graduate of Capilano College's prestigious animation program, Dave started in the business as an animator, worked his way up to director, and has been heading up series for the past 8 years. Dave's experience and positive attitude make him a valuable member of the Atomic team and we are fortunate to have here in a leadership role. His favorite animals are the finger monkey and the silverfish. Dave has a beard."
Here's what Dave had to say about working for Atomic.
What do you do at Atomic?
I'm an animator, animation director, and series director. I'm currently working on Counterfeit Cat in the capacity of animation/key posing supervisor.
Explain your daily work day...
I work with the in-house posing team to provide key animation for each episode while also supervising and providing direction to the posing team. I also work with our in-house revisionists and comp and FX team to deliver an episode final each week.
How long have been at Atomic? About 12 years
How did you get into animation?
I'm a huge Star Wars nerd and I originally wanted to work for ILM as a 3D FX animator. While going to school in Vancouver I fell in love with the city and with 2D animation and ended up making a career here instead!
What post-secondary school did you go to? Why did you choose that school? I attended Capilano University Commercial Animation Program. I had originally wanted to go to Sheridan College's animation program but decided on Cap because it was closer to home and family. Great school, can't recommend it enough!
Where are the other grads from your class working?
I have a couple of classmates directing at DHX, several who are animating features in LA, one who has founded a hugely successful game studio downtown (Klei Entertainment) and a couple who are art directing in Ontario at studios there. The majority of my graduating class has stayed in the animation or entertainment industry and done really well.
Tips for future directors?
Study film and animation a lot, familiarize yourself with all aspects of the production. Not just animation, story boarding and design, but music, script writing and even breaking down budget and schedule. It's invaluable in the pressure cooker of production to be fluent in as much as possible because so much comes down to making production minded creative decisions on the fly. It's important to always keep the big picture in mind rather than getting too fixated on one particular aspect of the production. Oh and try not to freak out or be an ass. Your crew might not like that.
Favourite things to do in Vancouver?
Spending time with my awesome wife and two daughters. Going to metal shows at the Commodore. Hurling insults at cyclists when they nearly clip me on my walk to work each day.
