RANGERS' RESPONSIBILITY – ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
The RIA has received numerous enquiries from boat owners as to why the Rangers do not respond to antisocial behaviour on board vessels.  Protocols on Rottnest Island are the same as the mainland where the responsibility to enforce laws rest with the WA Police.  RIA accommodation security does respond to loud music or noise in accommodation units to try and resolve the matter as a first response.  Our Rangers do assist the police if called upon for assistance.   Should you experience antisocial behaviour please ring the police on 131 444 for action.

ROTTNEST FRESH WATER IS A BALANCING ACT

Since 2012, in order to reduce reliance on the Wadjemup Aquifer, the RIA has invested in other water sources, supported by a hydrological assessment of groundwater resources and preparation of a Groundwater Licence Operating Strategy (GLOS). Abstraction from the aquifer is now capped at 20,000kL per year, a significant reduction from the average of ~33,000kL per year abstracted since 2007.   The soon to be commissioned Waste Water Treatment Plant will increase recovery of wastewater ~65,000kL of waste water annually.

Since 2013, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has been undertaking research to assess groundwater quality, residence times, and flow paths. In 2015, the RIA in partnership with University of New South Wales, ANSTO, and the Department of Water obtained funding for a collaborative research project to further improve our knowledge and understanding.  Research in collaboration with the University of Western Australia is also in progress to gain a better understanding of the hydrological dynamics of Rottnest’s wetland
system and the microbial mats and microbialite communities.

EIGHT KNOTS SPEED LIMIT FERRY OPERATORS
A number of enquiries have been received as to the speed of the ferries in the 5kt zone at the end of Ferry Jetty. The Department of Transport has gazetted the area as 5 knots however have granted the ferry operators an exemption to allow travel at 8 knots. This has been done due to the minimum idle speed for these vessels can do.
