The Right Support will Spur Bioeconomy 2.0
On the occasion of the fourth Bioeconomy Stakeholders’ Conference, the European Bioeconomy Alliance (EUBA) called on the EU to lead a worldwide transition towards a renewable, low-carbon economy. Europe could become a global leader in the bioeconomy, if European policy makers realise its potential and embrace the prospect of saving up to 2.5 billion tonnes of CO2 per year. Biotech Crops, the Satisfying Seeds
ISAAA marked the anniversary of the 1st adoption of biotech crops with a report retracing their evolution over the last 20 years. Research shows that they are the fastest adopted crop technology in recent years and that farmers are satisfied with their use, especially considering that they have helped 65 million people in the world, annually. “More farmers are planting biotech crops in developing countries precisely because they are a rigorously tested option for improving crop yields," said Clive James of ISAAA. Biotech in Numbers
How did biotech fare financially in 2015? Quite well, according to EY’s report which shows that Europe and the USA combined raised $71Bn, topping the previous $56Bn record in 2014. Europe alone raised $9,9Bn, which slightly increases its overall financings. Venture capital, follow-on offerings and innovation capital were also on the rise, while 33 European biotech companies went public in 2015. The UK came out as the winner in both innovation and capital ventures, followed by Ireland and France. Looking ahead, new breakthroughs and research are sure to make 2016 another successful year. On 12 April 2016, the Public Procurement Working Group of the European Commission’s Expert Group for Bio-based Products published 15 recommendations for an increased uptake of bio-based products in public procurement programs. The report states that benefits are reciprocal. Read more
