NiRA @ Ten: Young but growing steadily
 The month of March, dedicated to celebrating the 10th anniversary of NIRA climaxed with the 2016 .ng Web Award and Gala Night, which held at Oriental Hotel, Lagos on Saturday 2nd April 2016. Ten awards recognized the excellent achievements of those promoting the Nigerian online identity by using .ng domains. These are organizations/entities, who in the process of running their businesses, took the deliberate decision to be uniquely identified with their .ng domain names. There were also Ten special NiRA Presidential Awards for those who have also contributed to the promotion of the .ng brand in other unique ways.
Awards were presented to Fidelity Bank Plc, Galaxy Backbone Limited, The Guardian Newspaper, Eazyhire, Jumia, Google.com.ng, University of Lagos State, NACOSS, WHOGOHOST, Web Indices, IceCool Contracts Limited, Lagos State Government and many more. We are not yet there, we don’t have the numbers but we are focused on making the .ng brand, the brand to be reckoned with.

.ng OUR UNIQUE NIGERIAN IDENTITY

Introduction
Considering the growth of the Internet in Nigeria and the world in general, many organizations desire to develop their online presence. Therefore, they create and implement websites in pursuit of this. In a recent trip to the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), the need for corporate organizations to implement and incorporate the use of the dot NG as part of their domain name was highlighted. In my little research for this article I found out that even Chinese whose names end with .ng are coming to NiRA for a .Ng domain name.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name. Domain name can also be thought of as a location where certain information or activities can be found. In general, a domain name represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a website, or the website itself or any other service communicated via the Internet.
Domain names are organized in subordinate levels (sub domains) of the DNS root domain, which is nameless. The first-level set of domain names are the top-level domains (TLDs), including the generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs), such as the prominent domains .com, .info, .net, .edu, and .org, and the country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) of which our .ng falls into.

DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATIONS (JANUARY TO MARCH 2016)
 In March 2016, 2,496 new domain names were registered, 1,633 domain names were renewed and there were 551 transfers amongst the NiRA Accredited Registrars. The total number of domain name registrations from January to March 2016 is 7,075 registrations and 4,277 renewals. It is interesting and refreshing to witness such growth. The renewal rate is encouraging as well. The graph and table below indicate the domain name registrations and renewals for a 3 (three) month period: January, February and March across three years.

 Afrinic Announces “Fund for Internet Research and Education” Grants
AFRINIC, the Regional Registry for Internet Number Resources serving the African Internet Community has called for applications for the 2016 Fund for Internet Research and Education (FIRE) Grants. The application deadline is 31st May 2016.
The Fund for Internet Research and Education (FIRE Africa) is a venture between AFRINIC, The Internet Society (ISOC) and the International Development Research Center (IDRC) that supports projects that use ICT to develop innovative solutions to Africa's unique education, access, information, infrastructure and communication needs. The FIRE Africa Grants will provide four Grants of up to US$25,000 each for projects aligned with one of the following categories:
- Technical Innovation;
- Community Development;
- Governance Enhancement; and
- Education.
There are various grants of varying prices in various categories. It is important that projects must focus on the various categories.

NextGen@ICANN Application Open for ICANN56
 The ICANN56 meeting was formerly planned for Panama City, Panama but due to the Zika virus, it was moved to Helsinki, Finland. With the announcement of ICANN56 relocation to Helsinki, Finland the application round to participate in the NextGen@ICANN Program at Meeting B* in June 2016 was declared open. This round remains open until 18 April 2016 and successful candidates will be announced on the ICANN website by the 2nd May 2016. Meeting B is specifically focused on policy making and on-going work within ICANN Communities.
The NextGen@ICANN program remains the same for Meeting A, B and C: it is an education and awareness based experience, designed for a smaller, younger and more region-specific group of participants. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30, live in the region of the meeting and be engaged in some level of higher education, with focus on Internet related subject matter.
